Primary Purpose of the position:
The North Carolina Aquariums at Roanoke Island is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as Public Programs Educator. The Public Programs Educator position is responsible for developing and presenting educational programs to the public and aquarium visitors, to school groups, and special interest groups. The Educator will present public programs on environmental and marine science topics multiple times daily, prepare printed materials, respond to visitor questions, utilize electronic communication systems, and will be responsible for designing and creating new programs incorporating a variety of experiential learning methods including science, arts, theater, and music. This position works cooperatively with other departments to achieve the overall mission of the Aquarium. Evening, weekend, and holiday work is required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • preparing and giving public programs using live animals
  • designing and coordinating new programs and special educational events for the public
  • utilizing technology and A/V equipment to develop and conduct presentations
  • facilitating exhibit talks at various exhibits including touch pools
  • serving as a resource for teachers and community members
  • evaluating education programs for effectiveness
  • training, supervising, and evaluating interns, volunteers, and seasonal education staff.

The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located in Manteo, NC, nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head. The 61,000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 2,200 animals. More than 280,000 guests visit the aquarium each year to see a large array of sharks, learn about sea turtle conservation, participate in a variety of programs, enjoy the beauty of the area, and learn why North Carolina's waterways are so special.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following requirements listed below:


  • Experience in developing and presenting effective and engaging public programs in an informal setting, preferably in a zoo, aquarium, nature center, museum, or similar setting.
  • Experience presenting and handling live animals.
  • Experience in educational program design and assembly related to science, marine, or aquatic sciences.
  • Holidays, evenings, and weekend work required, as needed.
  • Must have a valid NC Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of museum or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
