Position Focus:

The African American Studies Department seeks a Project Manager for the Black Bibliography Project (BBP). The BBP aims to revive and transform descriptive bibliography—the systematic description of print materials as physical objects—for African American literary studies. By tapping the explanatory potential of digital technologies, the BBP is building an electronic database whose networking capacities can reveal the social formations and aesthetic practices that are specific to Black print culture, in the US and across the Black Diaspora.

The Project Manager will lead efforts to implement the data models designed in the project’s pilot phase and to scale up instruction and data-gathering. Collaborating closely with the BBP co-PIs and team members at Yale and Rutgers, the project manager will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the project. Reporting to the Co-PIs of the BBP, the Project Manager will set timetables and organize workflows, work closely with the Yale metadata librarian assigned to the BBP to revise and maintain project documentation, organize meetings of the Advisory Board and Consortium members, communicate with Yale leadership and Consortium partners at various institutions, organize the January training workshops and summer “refresh” sessions, supervise Yale BBP Fellows and student workers, manage payment of honoraria and student wages alongside the Operations Manager, coordinate with the Rutgers Black Studies Librarian assigned to the BBP to oversee the work of the Rutgers BBP Fellows and student workers, organize meetings of the Rutgers-Yale Quality Control team, work with Yale Printing and Publishing Services on updates and maintenance of the BBP’s WordPress website, organize national conference to demonstrate the capacities of the database, organize smaller salons and discussion groups on the history and future of Black Bibliography, plan, track, and report on all aspects of the project.

Will need to travel by car or public transport (rail, air, or bus) to Rutgers and/or library sites across the U.S.

Essential Duties

1. Oversees the advancement and growth of the program. Gives direction and leadership supporting the philosophy, mission, strategy, and annual goals and objectives. Assumes primary accountability for disseminating and publishing all program information to create public awareness and support of the program. 2. Works closely with leadership, internal and external colleagues, and community residents to further develop and implement strategic plans. 3. Identifies, solicits, and cultivates community partnerships and collaborations to assist in the development and growth of the program. Develops the metrics to identify and measure the success of the program. Responsible for measurements of grant success and related evaluation. 4. Assists in identifying and evaluating potential future funding sources, and contributes to the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program, including the annual submission and writing of all content areas and budgetary sections of grant applications. Develops and manages the program's operating budget. 5. Develops the administrative infrastructure of the program. Manages human resource and administrative functions of the program, including staffing and hiring, supervision, performance development, counseling and discipline, if warranted. Oversees and manages information systems, facilities, and space needs. 6. Investigates, identifies, implements, and oversees the maintenance of systems to gather, track, and report information to support the initiatives of the program. Tracks all program activities and regularly informs leadership of progress on each initiative. Recommends structural or programmatic adjustments, changes or additions based on full knowledge of missions, goals, and objectives. 7. Initiates, designs, and manages the compilation of program communications; identifying outreach potential, and promoting philanthropic and collaborative support of the program. Contributes to the development and assists in the management of content on the program’s website and monitors all changes and additions to the editorial content. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Proficiency with web design and digital communications platforms, Familiarity with book history and bibliography as areas of study. Familiarity with linked / open data, Wikidata, and name authority control.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Excellent organizational skills, and ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to multitask, be flexible and pivot as needed, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work effectively with competing deadlines. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact well with a diverse population. An excellent attendance record, punctuality, and reliability.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

ALA-accredited graduate library degree, or humanities MA or PhD. Must have significant familiarity with African American literary studies, such as undergraduate or graduate work in African American Studies, American Studies, History, English, or other areas with emphasis on African American materials.
