This position is part of a multi-disciplinary team with direct supervision from the Project Empower Manager and Assistant Director of Gender Based Violence Initiatives & IVPP Counseling. The Project Empower Team is part of Injury & Violence Prevention Programs (IVPP) under the Division of Acute Care Surgical Services.

Primary duties are direct patient care for a hospital-based community linked sexual and domestic/intimate partner violence program, dedicated to enhancing prevention and intervention services to victims and families who have or are experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV), domestic violence (DV), sexual assault/violence (SA/SV), Human Trafficking (HT) and other types of crime. Regular activities also include providing training and support to medical staff and community partners on supporting anti-violence initiatives and the needs of survivors.

Typical Duties
  • Provide hospital and community-based services to patients within VCU Health System who have experienced IPV/DV/SA/HT through assessment, crisis intervention, case management, and advocacy
  • Coordination with hospital and community providers to participate in connecting patients to appropriate services
  • Assist in administering and tracking the use of survivor materials and crisis funds
  • Facilitating communication and networking among internal and external service providers to increase efficiency and effectiveness of direct services to victims
  • Provide accompaniment for victims within the hospital, outpatient clinics, and other systems, such as criminal justice, as needed
  • Provide ongoing case management and follow up services post discharge for as long as needed/requested by the patient or until securely linked to a local provider for additional services
  • As part of a teaching hospital, participate in supporting and training interns and volunteers
  • Responsible for working with the team to ensure minimum in person staffing coverage is maintained during typical hours (Monday-Friday 8a-5p); in addition to rotating on call support for the Regional Hospital Accompaniment Response Team (RHART) and on University Holidays
  • Responsible for (co)facilitating training to VCU, VCU Health, and community partners on identification, screening, assessment, and referral processes for victims of violence to Project Empower or other appropriate services
  • Complete all program and grant funded goals as assigned within established due dates, including all data and documentation requirements within 24 hours of each encounter and/or training event
  • Commitment to complete a minimum of 40 annual hours of ongoing training and professional development


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in a human services related field with a minimum of two years related experience working with a sexual, domestic, intimate partner, and/or human trafficking violence OR at least 5 years of experience in a related field with no degree
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary hospital program team, individuals and families experiencing IPV/DV/SA/HT, and community providers
  • Ability to provide assessment, advocacy/case management and supportive mental health services to patients
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Dependable transportation required
  • Must agree to a Virginia Child Protective Services (CPS), a criminal background check, and medical clearance for VCU Health
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree with a minimum of one-year related experience working with a sexual, domestic, intimate partner, and/or human trafficking violence.
  • Bilingual spanish-english, experience with maternal health.
  • 3 years of experience and training working with the IPV/DV/SA/HT population in hospital-based, community-linked programs
  • Knowledge of IPV/DV/SA/HT service system
  • Prior knowledge and training in trauma-informed care for victims of IPV/DV/SA/HT
