JOB SUMMARY

The Lead Structural Engineer leads efficient and valuable construction projects with in depth-analysis, design, implementation, and specification of structural systems, platforms, foundations, and any other structural components utilized in heavy industrial facilities. Leads and empowers a team of engineers, designers, and drafters in performing design-build capital projects, troubleshoot and enhance equipment and systems while developing the team’s knowledge and skills.

DURING A TYPICAL DAY (IF THERE IS ONE)…

  • Nothing else matters without a safe environment! You will foster a culture where safety is non-negotiable.
  • In-depth analysis and design of complex steel, concrete, metal buildings, masonry structures, according to applicable codes and standards.
  • Ensures accuracy and quality of the department deliverables; advanced structural design calculations [calcs] sheets including how foundations will be dug, measurements, requirements, materials, project costs, labor and timescale.
  • Coach and guide structural engineering designers and structural engineering drafters to create, modify, and evaluate steel, concrete, metal buildings, masonry, and other structural drawings and models.
  • Prepare, review and approve written technical reports, designs and drawings and presentations by the Structural Engineering Team.
  • Assist in the development of engineering ‘best practice’ processes, targets, product research, testing, and written standards to achieve team goals.
  • Estimate and forecast costs, personnel and material needs for projects, and collaborate with leadership on proposals.
  • Perform on-site inspections to verify construction is performed according to drawings and specifications.
  • Function as Engineer of Record [EOR] for POET Design and Construction design-build construction projects as assigned.
  • Prepare request for proposals [RFP’s], write specifications and establish completion dates for engineering procurement services [EPC] and sequencing of design-build materials.
  • Collaborate with third party vendors and contractors on various construction projects, including bid packages, specifications, ordering materials and heavy equipment, and aiding in installation oversight and on-site commissioning activities.
  • Utilize structural engineering drafting, design-build, and project management software; RISA 3D, Autodesk AutoCAD 2D, AutoCAD 3D, ARAS, Jira and MS Project.
  • Review and award third party vendor contracts, review and approve vendor drawings, and work with project teams in defining and anticipating the project needs.
  • Effectively manage the team by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training team members. Leadership responsibilities also include delegating, coaching, managing performance and career development to effectively execute departmental strategies and support company objectives.
  • Foster a culture of safe behavior and environmental compliance at all times.
  • Maintain a team environment at all times and champion POET in the community.

STRENGTHS OF A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering with Structural emphasis, or equivalent engineering field, required.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering [FE] exam.
  • Professional Engineer [PE] is preferred.
  • Ten years related design-build experience with demonstrated experience in a related industry
  • Experience using structural engineering and project management software; RISA 3D [Rapid Interactive Structural Analysis], Advance Steel CAD, AutoCAD 2D, AutoCAD 3D, ARAS, Jira and MS Project.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills as well as the ability to adapt to change.
  • You have the ability to understand technical and day to day operation of a bioprocessing facility.
  • You know the basics of Microsoft Office Suite. You’re capable of learning new programs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Up to 25% travel will be part of the norm for this position to visit the bioprocessing facilities, meetings and site visits. Most travel obligations will have you back home at night.
  • The work environment at POET is dynamic. You should expect a balance between time spent in the office and at the bioprocessing facility, which may include some physical labor helping your team members.
  • Specific physical requirements include:Sitting for approximately 90% of the time while working on a personal computer.

Occasionally lifting weight up to sixty (60) pounds or less.
Climbing several flights of stairs and ladders.
Occasionally bending, twisting, and turning while lifting weights of less than fifty (50) pounds.
