Essentia Health is making the largest private investment in Duluth’s history as it transforms its downtown medical campus. This $900 million project, called Vision Northland, will match Essentia’s facilities with how medicine is practiced in the 21st century and bring the highest quality health care to patients.
Vision Northland represents a major investment in Essentia Health’s mission as well as the future of Duluth and surrounding areas. The project demonstrates Essentia Health’s commitment to the health of its patients, the economic vitality of the community and the work environment of its staff. Essentia Health is constructing a new replacement for St. Mary’s Medical Center and clinic space as well as renovating existing buildings on its downtown Duluth campus (the flagship of the East Market).

The project includes 942,000 square feet of new space. By building up instead of out, Essentia Health’s overall footprint will be reduced, opening space for other development in Duluth’s Central Hillside neighborhood. Vision Northland is much more than a building project. It’s about how Essentia Health cares for its patients while matching its facilities to how medicine is practiced now and in the future. Health care has changed since St. Mary’s Medical Center was founded in 1888. The construction project has reached substantial completion and is expected to open for patient care in the third quarter of 2023.

The Past and The Future
Building on a legacy of service to its communities started in 1888 with the founding of St. Mary’s Hospital by the Benedictine Sisters of the St. Scholastica Monastery and the Duluth Clinic in 1915 by five physicians, St. Mary’s-Duluth Clinic (SMDC) was formed in 1997 through the merger of these two entities. Over the ensuing years, SMDC grew through affiliation with other hospitals and clinics. In 2010, as Essentia Health, the organization began the journey to become an operating company. Today that journey continues as it strives to be “One Mission, One Essentia.”

In the fall of 2022, Essentia expanded to central North Dakota with the addition of Mid Dakota Clinic to the health system. Located in Bismarck, ND, the acquisition welcomed 40 physicians, 25 advanced practitioners and 280 additional staff to our care team. POSITION OVERVIEW AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Essentia Health is a secular integrated healthcare organization with Catholic entities serving northern Minnesota, Northwest Wisconsin and North Dakota. Among Essentia’s distinguishing characteristics are its history of Dyad leadership playing to the strengths of both Administrative and Physician leadership experience; its commitment to the Quadruple Aim as evidenced by sole status as a Track 3 NCQA certified organization; and the belief that value for our patients can best be delivered as an operating company.

As a member of the Essentia Health senior leadership team, the President, West Market plays an important role in creating and achieving the Essentia Health system strategic plan. In leading the West Market, the President partners with the Chief Operating Officer, West Market (dyad partner) to achieve operational, financial and clinical excellence for the West Market (approximately $760M in net revenues). The President will develop and implement market and organizational strategic initiatives through Market physician and executive leaders and shared services partners. He/She is also responsible for Essentia’s long-term organizational success through market strategic development, oversight of the market’s quality performance, support for financial performance, credentialed provider recruitment and development of physician and Advanced Practice leaders for the present and future for the West.

Further, the President will put long-term systems and processes in place to maximize operational efficiencies, support market share growth, and achieve outstanding care quality. 
The West Market President is one of a select number of executives who attend the Essentia Health (system) Board meetings. In addition, this President works with the Market Board Chairperson to further the mission and strategies of the organization, with a focus on market-specific matters. These responsibilities include sharing relevant updates on financial, quality, patient safety and strategic plan performance as well as education on issues in health care. The President is responsible to foster and maintain a strong working relationship with the Market Board, one in which open and productive dialogue is encouraged and governance and operational roles are recognized and respected. 
The Market President keeps abreast of regional developments, serves as a public spokesperson, coordinates public relations activities as appropriate and serves on community boards as a representative of Essentia. It is expected that the Market President is active in the broader community through local board and community service activities. 
The Market President will ensure a systematic approach to credentialed practitioner development, including performance reviews that address both required clinical matters and professional development. 
The Market President will focus on increasing Essentia Health’s network/presence throughout North Dakota, delivering the highest quality care to patients and communities. He/She will drive strategic market growth, including appropriate new partnerships/alliances.
 The Market President works closely with the Market Chief Medical Officer and practice leaders to ensure that information is shared, and decisions are made through established committee and meeting structures. Through the predictable cadence of two-way communication, trust is established, and credentialed practitioner engagement is fostered. 
The Market President partners closely with the System Chief Medical Officer for Essentia Health on all matter related to quality, safety, and innovation. 
At all times, the Market President will uphold Essentia’s mission, values, and ethical standards and demonstrate the behavioral and service expectations described in our policies and procedures.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS / TRAITS
 Ten (10) or more years of large healthcare delivery leadership experience in roles of increasing responsibility.
 Proven experience as a physician executive in senior administrative leadership roles within a large integrated health system is required. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success serving in an operational (P&L) leadership position over hospitals, medical groups, and/or clinical service lines. 
Strong leadership and team-building skills; the capacity to both listen and communicate effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies; a highly collaborative management style; the recognition that results are accomplished through others; and the ability to look at complex, organizational issues through multiple perspectives.
 Superb relationship building skills with a professional and personal demeanor that will include the following: open and trusting; a problem solver and results-oriented; visible and accessible; consistent and clear; a facilitator, interpreter, and consensus builder; a commitment to building a partnership between administration and medical staff; and the ability to listen, gather information, influence, and assume responsibility/accountability for difficult decisions.
 Proven ability and success in implementing and executing operational change, setting performance measurements, establishing budget plans and monitoring progress, strategic planning, program development and implementation, and process improvement techniques.
 Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills to foster collaborative partnerships with senior leaders, physician constituents, clinical leaders, and other key stakeholders to create and sustain a culture of safety and quality, performance transparency, teamwork, measurement, and accountability to drive clinical transformation.
 Able to effectively communicate, delegate and hold people accountable. Able to have “difficult conversations” when needed, but do so in a very respectful and professional manner. 
Thorough understanding of the best practices in a multi-specialty physician practice within an integrated health care system.
 Experience with system merger and integration efforts is preferred. 
Must have the ability to lead through influence and collaboration, as Essentia Health is a highly matrixed organization. Must be able to work collaboratively with corporate/system leaders to affect positive change. 
Demonstrated ability to bring diverse groups together in a manner that respects different points of view and builds buy-in for change.
 A portion of Essentia Health’s employees is unionized and so experience working within a union environment is a plus. 
Experience with population health is ideal. Should be committed to the transformation of healthcare to more value-based care.
 A consensus-oriented individual who displays “respectful courage” and is highly influential in his/her ability to encourage people to move forward. Excellent at change management. 
High emotional intelligence (“EQ”) is needed for success in this major leadership position. 
A person of extremely high integrity who fosters trust. Leads by example.

EDUCATION
 A current M.D. or D.O. is required with Board Certification in his/her clinical specialty. 
Active license to practice medicine in relevant market is required. 
Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration or Business Administration, or related graduate degree, is required.
