Working under the supervision of the shift supervisor, the Equipment Operator 3rd Class is responsible for assisting in the safe, legal, reliable, and cost-efficient operation and maintenance of campus utility production and distribution systems of steam, chilled water, condensate, and domestic water. This position is located at the Central Utility Plant on the Georgetown University, Washington DC campus.


What you’ll do:

  • Analyze chemical analysis of boiler, condensate return, chilled water, and condenser water system. Adjusts chemical treatment to specified ranges established by the chemical treatment company
  • Records and monitors equipment operating conditions and reports or adjusts as required to maintain safe and efficient operation
  • Participates in repair, maintenance, installation, and upkeep of all Central Plant equipment and work areas
  • Reviews operational manuals, technical manuals, and plant procedures

What you bring:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 3+ years of training or experience in the trade practice of steam engineering. Must operate intuitively from previous knowledge in troubleshooting gauges and instruments on equipment to bring about the satisfactory operation.
  • Minimum 3rd Class DC Steam Engineers License
  • Capable of understanding and operating complex operation of high-pressure steam and chilled water systems which can be operated in several ways depending on operational needs
  • Designated as an emergency employee and must report to work regardless of the university’s operating status
  • Adhere to the highest safety standards while multi-tasking and utilizing problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Utilize hard work ethic, self-starter, and can-do attitude while analyzing plant processes, recommend, and implement improvements
  • Work from drawings and be capable of systematically and logically locating the problem when drawings are not available
  • Novice in translating and communicating operational problems to all levels of management
  • Excellent team player who is intrigued by detecting problems and implementing the solution
  • Must be a champion of the six (6) guiding principles of the ENGIE team at Georgetown University as they are impacted by your position

Additional Information/Conditions:

  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements and communicate effectively, both written and verbally
  • Capacity to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy while using company-issued computer, calculator, and other devices
  • Capability to lift light to medium-weight objects utilizing necessary safety equipment as needed
  • Competence to perform work from ladders or scaffolds, on top of boilers, next to hot steam-driven equipment, and near rotating equipment. This may require a person to push or pull objects and/ or work inside confined spaces, manholes, crawl space or work in an abnormal sitting or standing positions
  • Must have a valid state-issued driver’s license
  • Willingness to develop technical proficiency in some software applications (Maximo, SAP, ADP)
  • Must be eligible to work for any U.S. employer without the need for sponsorship now or in the future
