The Position

Pool Manager

Are you interested in spending your time at the pool while gaining valuable work experience? The City of Ontario is now seeking enthusiastic individuals to staff its five aquatic facilities located throughout the City. Pool Managers are responsible for supervising a variety of aquatic activities, observing swimmers, and enforcing regulations in the guarding of life as well as accident prevention. Incumbents will also perform recreational work supervising a variety of aquatic activities at designated neighborhood swimming pool sites and perform other related work as necessary.

This is a part-time position in the City's aquatics program. The work schedule is determined by availability, operating hours, and the incumbent's skill level in the position. Part-time/temporary positions are scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week and are not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans.

Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Pool Manager include the following:


  • Supervises aquatic activities at a neighborhood swimming pool for the recreation program including swim lessons, recreational swim, swim team, and other related activities.
  • Supervises and evaluates a small number of subordinate staff.
  • Instructs a variety of lessons and leads events.
  • Plans and directs a continuing aquatic safety program.
  • Inspects facility for safety and maintenance.
  • May assist with in-service training.
  • Maintains records.
  • Assists in promotion of activities.

Qualification Guidelines

Education

High school diploma or recognized equivalent.

Experience

One year of part-time aquatics experience.

Desirable

Ability to organize and conduct various age groups in swimming for beginning through advanced skill levels.
Knowledge of recreation and its application to individual and group behavior with particular emphasis on aquatic programming.
Two years of part-time aquatics experience.
Leadership abilities.

Licenses, Certifications and Training

At time of appointment (hire), applicant must possess the following American Red Cross certifications:


  • Lifeguard Training
  • Water Safety Instructor certification (WSI)
Special Requirements

This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings, holidays and weekends.

NOTE: If your application is accepted, you will be invited to participate in an assessment process, which will include an interview and swim test. Assessment dates and additional details regarding the assessment process will be provided at a later date. All potential hires are required to pass a fingerprint review, pre-employment physical examination and TB test.

Supplemental Information

Lifeguard Training

The City of Ontario provides Lifeguard Training courses to assist you on your way to becoming an aquatic professional.

Successful completion of water safety courses and all required tests does not guarantee employment with the City of Ontario; however, completion of requirements are necessary for successful eligibility for this position.

Participants must be 16 years old before the final class session, be able to swim 300 yards with a combination of breaststroke and front crawl and pick up a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7 feet and swim 25 yards with it. Attendance at all classes is required - NO EXCEPTIONS! Participants receive access to the online instruction upon enrollment in the Lifeguard Training course and are required to pass all module and submit completion to the Instructor prior to the final exam.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Training

The City of Ontario provides WSI Training courses to assist you on your way to becoming an aquatic professional.

Successful completion of water safety courses and all required tests does not guarantee employment with the City of Ontario; however, completion of requirements are necessary for successful eligibility for this position.

Participants must be 16 years old before the final class, be able to swim Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Elementary Backstroke and Butterfly for 25 yards, and tread for 1 minute. Attendance at all classes is required - NO EXCEPTIONS! Participants receive a class syllabus with confirmed dates and times upon enrolling in the class.

Fee Reimbursement


Candidates who are successfully hired into the position of Lifeguard, Instructor Guard, Pool Manager or Senior Pool Manager may be eligible for a partial reimbursement of course registration fees up to $160 for the Lifeguard course and $210 for the Water Safety Instructor course. Reimbursements will be refunded to the original payee. To be eligible for reimbursement, the candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete and pass the Lifeguard and/or Water Safety Instructor course.
  • Successfully complete any required selection processes and be hired as a Lifeguard, Instructor Guard, Pool Manager or Senior Pool Manager with the City of Ontario.
  • Work a minimum of 150 hours.
