The Metro Transit Police Department is
one of the fastest growing law enforcement agencies in the state due the expansion of light rail and Rapid Transit Bus systems. We are a licensed police force committed to the safety of our customers and employees, serving eight counties and approximately 85 cities in the region. There is an authorized strength of 171 full-time officers, 80 part-time officers, 70 community service officers and 31 administrative staff dedicated to one thing: public safety on and near our transit system. Salary:
Start - $35.14 hourly / $73,091 annual
After year 1 - $37.95 hourly / $78,936 annual (based on contracted 2023 wage rates)
After year 2 - $40.75 hourly / $84,760 annual (based on contracted 2023 wage rates*)
After year 3 - $43.53 hourly / $90,542 annual (based on contracted 2023 wage rates*)
After year 4 - $46.84 hourly / $97,468 annual (based on contracted 2023 wage rates*)

  • The current LELS 432 FT Officer Labor Contract is effective until December 31, 2023.

Lateral Officers: Hourly rate will be based on years of sworn full-time experience upon completion of the academy.

5% shift differential is offered for working between the hours of 1800-0600.
12.5% shift differential is offered for FTO.

What you would do in this job

As a Sworn Full-Time Metro Transit Police Officer, you will protect employees and passengers, and safeguard property and equipment of Metro Transit across all municipalities of our eight county Metro-wide system. You will patrol assigned areas in a squad car, on foot, or onboard public transit and perform visual inspections and recognize, respond, investigate, and enforce violations of laws and ordinances.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

  • An associate degree in Law Enforcement from an accredited College or University AND must currently be MN Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) licensed or eligible to be POST licensed as a full-time peace officer in the State of Minnesota by the time of conditional offer.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):
  • Bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement from an accredited College or University
  • Conversational in a second language other than English

SELECTION PROCESS:
Candidates will be referred to the hiring supervisor for consideration based on the results of the following assessment process:

  • Minimum Qualification Review
    - Review by Human Resources to ensure minimum qualifications are met, including an acceptable Work Record Evaluation for internal ATU employees.
  • Structured Panel Interview – Scored interview by a panel of Metro Transit/Met Council staff.
  • Chief Selection Interview – Interview including the Chief of Police.
  • Background Check – Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Metro Transit Police Department.
  • Psychological Evaluation – After passing the background check, a conditional offer of employment may be extended. All candidates must be recommended for hire based on the psychological evaluation.
  • Medical Examination / Work Performance Test / Drug test – Candidates must successfully pass the medical examination, work performance and pre-employment drug screen.

Criminal Background Checks:

Convictions are not an automatic disqualification from the selection process and must fall within Minnesota State Statute 6700.0700.
