Position Summary and Purpose: Set up and operate planer to remove metal in a reciprocating manner with tooling to form various shapes of die products
Duties and Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL:
- Receive work assignment, secure drawings; plan work, type of set up and machining requirements
- Obtain and return needed tools or fixtures, keep them in proper working condition
- Using remote overhead crane, position and secure workpiece to table, using shims, parallel blocks, clamps, wrenches, die fixture
- Mount tool, begin cutting and observe operation; set machine for automatic or manual control as needed
- Perform precision planning and grooving operations on parts such as vee, offset, gooseneck and special dies; also planes other parts such as wedges, utilizing the die fixture for set-up
- May sharpen own tools
- May lay out end of die
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area and perform all assignments in a safe manner and in accordance with established quality procedures
Education and Experience:
REQUIRED:
- High School diploma or certificate of equivalency
- 2 years experience with manual machining
Valued But Not Required:
- Technical school certificate or degree
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Characteristics, etc.
REQUIRED:
- Ability to read and interpret prints and engineered drawings
- Working knowledge of GD&T
- Excellent math skills, ability to use measuring tools and gauges
- Attention to detail

Valued But Not Required:
- Ability to grind own tools
Tools, Technology and Equipment Used: Remote overhead crane, ropes, lifters and lifting tools, planer and die fixture, cutting tools, precision measuring devices, machinist’s hand tools
Physical Demands and Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. This position is active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, reaching with hands and arms and climbing ladders. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and to climb or balance. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud at times. The employee must regularly lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
