Pierce County Parks is known for its rich tradition of serving all members of our community. Nearly 1,000 households across the county include a family member with cognitive and developmental disabilities. We serve all ages with activiites that build social, emotional and physical wellness. In 2020, Metro Parks Tacoma and Pierce County merged efforts to reach out to and serve individuals who became home-bound, establishing virtual and new, safe, small-group activities. Disruption to community-based services has been very hard on this population that was already prone to isolation. Isolation leads to social-emotional and physical deterioration which compromises independence. While some services have been re-established, participant levels are about 30% of what they were prior to COVID. Members will be contacting households with a record of past participation, as well as promoting services to eligible households who are new to the area. Participant households will receive twice a month contacts, virtually and through in-person programming, to re-orient, re-establish and grow patterns of socialization. In-person activities will be offered in locations throughout the county to reduce transportation barriers to participation. Members also provide information about healthy living, provide service referrals and help participants connect to one another. This position offers variety, creates smiles and is a great professional development opportunity - members will be mentored by the best in the field. Interviews will happen in August so apply soon, our community needs you to help bring specialized sport, recreation and socialization services to those who need it most!
