Job Description:

  • PURPOSE OF JOB:

To collect, accession and process specimens according to policy, under the direction and supervision of the Laboratory.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

35% 1. Collects blood specimens according to Specimen Collection Manual and Reference

Laboratory Manuals.

35% 2. Accessioning Laboratory specimens and identify/resolve problems connected with test orders.

10% 3. Provide quality customer service.

10% 4. Cross train and assist in other areas of the Laboratory as needed.

10% 5. Promote patient safety by compliance with Organizational/Departmental policies and procedures

and regulatory agencies requirements.

III. JOB CRITERIA AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  • Collects appropriate blood specimens according to Specimen Collection Manual and Reference

Laboratory Manuals.

  • Properly identify all patients prior to phlebotomy.

  • Successfully perform venipuncture, capillary collections and blood culture collection on patients according to age specific criteria.

  • Correct sample tubes are selected and the correct order of draw is followed for all phlebotomy collections

  • Know the proper labeling requirements for all laboratory samples.

  • Demonstrates cost accountability in the use of supplies and equipment.

  • Correctly utilizes Mobilab.

2. Accessioning Laboratory specimens and identify/resolve problems connected with test orders.

  • Cross-check Laboratory referrals with computer orders to ensure ordering accuracy.

  • Combine laboratory test orders to prevent duplicate testing.

III. JOB CRITERIA AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS, cont'd:

  • Identify requisition and sample issues. Notify physician's office, nursing homes etc. to correct or seek assistance to resolve issue.

  • Successfully receive samples into the hospital information system.

  • Process and deliver all laboratory samples to the correct sections.

  • Expedite STAT samples to ensure conformance with established TAT.

3. Provide quality customer service.

  • Respond to customer needs with respect and professionalism.

  • Use the telephone in a professional manner.

  • Comply with hospital and laboratory dress code

  • Prioritize work and efficiently expedite workload.

  • Work is accurate, neat, and completed in a timely fashion.

  • Associate remains well organized and exercises independent judgment in times of need.

4. Cross train and assist in other areas of the Laboratory as needed.

  • Assists in other areas of the laboratory as assigned. (Cyto, Micro, Histo,Office)

  • Consistently perform as a self starter to complete duties as assigned.

  • Cooperate with and take initiative to assist coworkers in completing work.

  • Demonstrate responsibility for containment of hospital costs by conservation of hospital supplies, equipment and time. Notify supervisor when supplies are running low.

5. Promote patient safety by compliance with Organizational/Departmental policies and procedures.

  • Maintains confidentiality of customers and associates at all times.

  • Timely completion of mandatory job requirements:

  • CPR

  • Yearly competencies

  • RAHE

  • Fire safety/Safety CE

  • FIT testing

  • Background clearance and fingerprinting

  • Continual education.

    • Keeps abreast of changes and exhibits a supportive attitude.

    • Keeps abreast of and complies with contents in Laboratory Manual, DH Associate Manual, Infection Control Manual, Chemical/Safety Hygiene Manual, Computer and each Departmental Policy and Procedure Manuals.

    • Associate is able to admit errors and accepts responsibility for actions.

    • Communicate, consult and share pertinent information with coworkers and supervisors according to established channels and lines of authority

    • Associate actively participates in and supports departmental and organizational Performance Improvement Initiatives.

    • Associate complies with dress code of department.

    • Utilizes equipment properly in order to maintain a safe environment at all times for patients and associates.




Job Qualifications:

V. QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Phlebotomy Certification preferred

B. Experience: Phlebotomy experience preferred

C. Other Skills: Must have driver's license, vehicle in good operating condition and proof of adequate automobile insurance, BLS Certification required, excellent interpersonal and team building skills

D. Training: 2 - 4 Weeks
