We are looking for animal loving, animal experienced people to join our team!

SUMMARY: The Pet Matchmaker helps potential foster and forever families find the perfect pet to fit their family, home, and lifestyle. This position requires a true team player experienced with handling dogs and assessing their behavior, and is highly effective at interacting positively with the public, embracing the diversity of our community and welcoming them as partners in our lifesaving mission. The Pet Matchmaker has exceptional verbal communication skills, and is willing to dedicate themselves to the mission of the organization, ensuring that every family who wants a pet can have a pet responsibly.

Pet Matchmaking

· Happily greet people at the front door and in the Adoption Center to provide assistance.

· Be aware of daily adoption specials, hours of operation, and upcoming events that you can share with the public.

· Meet with individuals and families interested in adopting or fostering animals to learn more about them to determine which dog will be a good fit for them.

· Walk prospective families through the kennels following City protocols.

· Following HSCTX protocols, introduce prospective foster and forever families, including their kids and dogs, to shelter dogs, making sure that a second staff member assists when the family brings their own dogs.

· Be completely transparent with fosters and adopters about the behavior and medical history of the dogs you are showing. If you don’t know the history, ask an HSCTX staff member.

· Participate in on-site and off-site adoption events.

· Train and manage volunteers to walk dogs and perform meet and greets with prospective families.

Dog Walking

· Walk through the kennels each day to familiarize yourself with the location of each dog.

· Walk all dogs at the shelter to get to know their personalities to be able to match them with the right families.

· Consult the Dog Walking Board and HSCTX staff about the behavior and medical history of each dog.

· Assure that every dog gets walked every day, and update the Dog Walking Board accordingly.

Social Media

· Take photos and videos of available animals, and upload them promptly to the Google Drive.

· Utilize social media to showcase available animals on the main Facebook page.

Administrative Duties

· Work as a strong team member for the mission of the organization by attending team meetings, acting professionally, participating in training, and providing support to others as needed.

· If the Customer Care Specialist and Adoption Counselor are busy, out, or not available, answer the main phone to assist customers.

Required Qualifications

· Must love animals and believe that every animal deserves a chance to find a loving home.

· Experience with handling dogs of all ages, sizes, conditions, and behaviors.

· Professional, friendly, outgoing demeanor.

· Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills.

· High level verbal communication skills.

· Excellent listening skills and compassion for others.

· Ability to process verbal information and read between the lines.

- Excellent problem-solving skills and high level of attention to detail.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with few breaks and little down time.
  • Must be resourceful, proactive, and flexible as a team player.

· Willing to work weekends, holidays, and varying shift times.

Willing to work in an office space with animals present, which may involve tolerating sounds and smells.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to stand, walk, kneel, sit on the floor, sit at a desk, lift up to 50 pounds, and get animals safely in and out of kennels to show to the public. It also requires working outside in intense and varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
