General Statement of Duties

Provides patrons with library services in a variety of areas with concentration on performing arts. Reports to a Librarian III, or Library Manager.

Some evening and weekend/alternate hours required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

LEVEL I

Master’s degree in Library Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university, plus a general knowledge of library procedures and 6 months of experience in library services with a concentration in performing arts.

LEVEL II

Master’s degree in Library Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university, plus 18 months of experience in professional library work, including planning and executing performing arts programs.

CAREER PATH:

A Performing Arts Librarian I who successfully completes twelve (12) consecutive months of work following the six (6) month probationary period shall be upgraded to a Librarian II conditional upon the following:

1. The employee received a satisfactory rating in their most recent performance evaluation as a Librarian I. In the event the employee did not receive a performance evaluation within that timeframe, the employee shall be upgraded to Librarian II.


2. The employee has not received discipline within the past eighteen (18) months.

Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge of professional library principles and practices.

Demonstrated knowledge of literature and services focused on adults, young adults, and children.

Demonstrated knowledge of basic stage production processes.

Proven ability to plan and execute performing arts programs for diverse audiences, including adults, young adults, and children.

Proven ability in the preparation and review of vendor and performer contracts.

Demonstrated proficiency in the use of current and emerging technology as it relates to library applications, downloadable library content, and online databases.


Proven ability to demonstrate good judgment and make sound decisions.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues as well as diverse constituencies of library patrons.

Examination: 100% Training & Experience Assessment


The examination to determine a candidate's eligibility for the position will be a Training and Experience Assessment. This type of examination requires that you completely fill out the application, adding pages for additional relevant information where needed, and attaching any documentation of certificates, degrees, other significant documents, etc. A candidate's eligibility to be interviewed will be based solely on material submitted at the time of application. Once the Eligibility List is prepared no further information may be submitted and no adjustments will be made.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides reference and readers' advisory services using both in-person and electronic formats to library patrons using the appropriate library materials.

Guided by the library's collection development policy, participates in the selection of materials in performing arts as well as other assigned areas.

Plans and implements performing arts programs for children, young adults and adults.

Prepares and reviews contracts with vendors and performers with concentration in performing arts.

Assists library patrons and staff in using technology and conducts formal training session regarding same.

Serves as one of the Library’s "virtual librarians" responding to queries from the public and other libraries via email and reference chat.

Prepares displays, exhibits, book lists, blogs and bibliographies.

Contributes to the Library’s website and social media content.

Assists with the preparation of team schedules for staff members.

Provides input to reports, minutes, and letters related to library policies, programming and/or school related activities for various audiences including internal and external communications.

Keeps current with developments in the library profession.

Supports Town policies and philosophies.

Performs related work as required.

Supplemental Information

All positions may be subject to an interview process. The Town reserves the right to limit the number of qualified candidates who will be invited to participate in the examination, or any part thereof.

All outside candidates will be required to undertake and successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination, which includes a substance abuse test, given at the Town's expense prior to employment if conditionally offered a part time, full time or safety sensitive position.
