GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

  • Ensure all payroll transactions are processed accurately and timely in accordance with University policies and procedures
  • Perform necessary data entry in payroll software
  • Employee tax information
  • Direct deposit information
  • Calculate and enter employee garnishments/child support orders
  • Enter voluntary/involuntary deductions as required
  • Execute time sheets and attendance processing and interface with payroll software
  • Ensure time sheets are complete with appropriate approvals
  • Assist employees and supervisors with time keeping questions & training
  • Maintain and update time keeping software
  • Review and correct errors to ensure the accuracy of earnings
  • Ensure that all changes to payroll are processed accurately
  • Process and review the accuracy of payroll deductions and garnishments
  • Print, sort, and distribute payroll checks and direct deposits
  • Calculate and process tax payments
  • Upload report of new employee hires to State of Connecticut
  • Process manual checks and reissue checks as needed
  • Complete retroactive pay calculations and process payment
  • Complete verifications of employment
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and employee files
  • Respond to employee inquiries and requests regarding payroll matters
  • Work closely with Human Resources on all payroll related issues
  • Changes in pay
  • Special payments
  • Paid time off
  • Holiday pay
  • Taxable tuition remission
  • Work closely with Finance on all payroll related issues
  • Provide audit information when requested
  • Provide payroll reports after each payroll (payroll register, 403b report, 457b report, direct deposit report, etc.)
  • Maintain client confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential

Required minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Accounting or related field is required
  • A minimum of two years of experience in payroll or accounting is required
  • Experience working in a higher education environment is preferred
  • Experience working with payroll software preferred, experience with Banner software a plus
  • Knowledge of payroll best practices and knowledge of federal and state tax regulations a plus
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Excel is required
  • Must demonstrate a strong work ethic and a high level of professionalism
  • Must be able to multi-task and work in a very dynamic environment
  • Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate with various levels of management
  • Must be detail oriented and able to adhere to tight deadlines with excellent organizational skills
  • These qualifications may be waived for individuals with appropriate alternate experience
