Patient Care Technician 2 - Emergency Department

This is a Full-Time position
72 hours every two weeks, benefit-eligible
Day Shift: 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM
12-Hour Shifts
Rotating Weekends

PCT's participate in self scheduling-as such they must input into their preferred monthly schedule, including weekend dates.

Position Highlights:
The Patient Care Technician II (PCT) performs a variety of clinical and environmental tasks under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The PCT duties are of a technical nature requiring specialized training and skills including but not limited to routine (daily) utilization of phlebotomy skills. The PCT demonstrates the ability to care for patients of all ages in the clinical setting. The PCT exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Position Responsibilities:
Assists the RN in the delivery of patient care.
Reports to charge RN or designate for assignment of duties.
Maintains a safe patient environment.
Sets priority of duties based on needs of patient and unit under the direction of the RN.
Under the direction of the RN, participates in the implementation of individualized plans of care.
Assists patients in activities of daily living.
Accurately obtains patient data and documents all care in the appropriate patient care record.
Performs routine procedures, treatments and specimen collections.
Demonstrates aseptic technique, when necessary.
Assists RN or physician with advanced procedures.
Assists the nurse in the management of uncomplicated tubes and drains.
Performs specific patient care procedures such as blood glucose testing, specimen collection, etc.
Demonstrates knowledge of age specific variables and growth and development.
Immediately reports changes in patient condition to the appropriate RN.
Performs phlebotomy routinely, as delegated; correctly labels and processes specimens for laboratory analysis.
Transports patients and (other) items as needed.
Assists with admission, discharge, and transport of patients.
Transports laboratory specimens and patient belongings as required.
Obtains blood products, supplies and equipment as necessary.
Competently utilizes technology.
Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the telephone and patient call system(s).
Demonstrates proficiency in the use of Epic.
Demonstrates proficiency in the use of selected unit specific monitors, pumps, and other equipment.
Consistently documents in real time at the point of care.
Maintains a safe and orderly, well-equipped environment
Maintains a safe work environment: Keeps patient rooms and unit orderly according to guidelines and unit routine.
Independently orders, organizes, and restocks according to unit specifications.
Replenishes patient room supplies.
Maintains emergency supplies.
Demonstrates a professional work style in interactions with internal and external customers.
Communicates all pertinent information to the appropriate team member throughout the shift and to the oncoming shift.
Negotiates break time and communicates departure and return time per unit protocol.
Demonstrates a willingness to accept positive and negative feedback and changes behavior as indicated.
Demonstrates initiative and self-direction in work habits.

Position Qualifications Include:
Knowledge
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Prior formal clinical training is required. This may include CMA, CNA, PCT, EMT, corpsman, paramedic, and nursing or medical student experience.
Maintains current BLS certification.
Prior clinical experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
Successful completion of the institutional screening examination.
Skills:
Ability to solve simple problems.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Phlebotomy
Abilities:
Work requires the ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift.
Work requires lifting or carrying objects 35-40 lbs. and supporting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.
Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.
