Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Student Advising & Support Services, the Part-Time Hourly (PTH) Academic Advisor guides students through appropriate placement based on current skill level, scheduling of courses and specific program requirements through graduation. PTH Academic Advisors are available during the entry process and throughout the student's career at Cascadia College, providing guidance in short-term or long-term educational planning to complete a certificate, degree, or transfer process. The PTH Academic Advisor will assist students in person, via e-mail, phone, and online media.

As a Part-Time Hourly (PTH) Academic Advisor, it is expected that the following qualities will be demonstrated daily: a high degree of understanding and empathy for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors, as well as the ability to encourage the inclusion of all voices in decision-making, promoting equity in all areas, and actively working against institutionalized norms of oppression against historically marginalized people.

Employee Type: Part-Time Hourly

Salary: $24.95/hour up to 16 hours a week (69 hours per month)

Essential Duties

General Transfer Student Advising
  • Assist students with course selection, registration and retention
  • Assist students with short-term and long-term education planning, major, transfer and career exploration
  • Interpret test scores and unofficial transcripts and assign appropriate equivalencies
  • Deliver individual and/or group advising in person, by telephone, e-mail or video conference settings
  • Apply transformational advising methods to promote student success
  • Connect student to campus and off-campus resources
  • Design and deliver materials (e.g. handouts, webpages, etc.) and presentations related advising department goals
  • Other duties as assigned



Student Success Services
  • Research course equivalencies
  • Participate in new student orientation sessions
  • Interpret college and enrollment policies
  • Respond to student e-mail and instant messages
  • Assist with academic probation and readmission processes



Committees/Meetings
  • Participate in advising-related committees, meetings and training sessions as requested


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • One year experience working in a student services at a postsecondary institution
  • Demonstrated commitment to and interest in diversity, equity and inclusion and the ability to support a multicultural workplace and educational environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in education or related field
  • One (1) year of experience of academic advising in a community college setting
  • Experience using technology in the delivery of student development and advising services
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in a team environment


Terms of Employment

Part Time Hourly (PTH) employees are exempt from civil service rules and regulations. These employees work for the college on an as-needed basis and are paid an hourly wage for work performed in specific assignments. These positions are typically not eligible for benefits. This is a part-time, temporary position scheduled to work up to 16 hours a week not to exceed 69 hours per month.

Physical Work Enviroment

Semi-Sedentary Work: Involves staying in a stationery position to a significant degree. Jobs are sedentary if moving is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Work is performed at the Cascadia College campus and in a variety of local settings.

Position in this class typically require: operating a computer, communicating, observing and repetitive motions. Exerting between 10-30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to transport, put, install, remove, or otherwise move objects.

Conditions of Employment

The College is currently in predominantly hybrid operations, with many assignments completed in an online environment during this time. Employees will need to provide their own remote work space and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. When the College returns to on-campus operations, this position will perform work in a standard office and lab setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus, and requires the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means.
