2022 Salary Range: $17.95 - $24.24 hourly

2023 Salary Range: $19.56 - $25.48 hourly

Job Summary:

This position performs general upkeep and cleaning of park facilities, landscape maintenance including: mowing, watering, pruning, weed control and facility/equipment repairs; and operating a variety of motorized equipment and a variety of hand and power tools.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

• High school diploma or equivalent;
• 1 year of grounds maintenance experience and/or a combination of experience and education;
• Valid Colorado driver's license and a good driving record;
• Knowledge in the use of operating hand and power tools, light trucks, tractors, used in the field of park/athletic field maintenance;
• Knowledge of the upkeep and maintenance of parks including landscaping knowledge and sprinkler systems;
• Basic math skills are necessary to lay out soccer/football fields and base placement for baseball/softball at athletic facilities;
• English/Spanish bilingual skills desired.

Essential Functions:

• Install, troubleshoot, and repair sprinkler heads, pipes, controls, valves and drip systems;
• Mow and aerate turf areas, plant, weed and maintain floral displays, monitor turf for pests and weeds;
• Inspect and resolve trash, graffiti, vandalism, lighting in assigned areas monitor parking lots, parking blocks, signs, striping, etc.;
• Pour concrete including sidewalk sections and art pads, etc.;
• Perform daily safety, operating, and maintenance inspections of park/athletic field facilities to ensure that the equipment is in safe working order; perform minor maintenance of small items of equipment as needed, and cleaning of these pieces after use; schedule the preventative maintenance service and repairs on all large and small items of equipment; and aid in the repair of playground equipment ensuring equipment is safe for use;
• Perform installation, set up, and tear down tables, tents, electricity access, bleachers, signs, fencing, etc., for special events; working with groups hosting events to arrange for any special needs such as; electricity, water, bleachers, stages, chairs, tables, locates for tents or jump houses;
• Maintain park facilities and structures;
• Repair, replace, and modify components of existing large-scale potable and non-potable irrigation systems, design, and install new irrigation, by arranging for necessary equipment which may include trenchers, pipe pullers, and backhoes;
• Troubleshoot irrigation issues based on turf conditions, make necessary repairs, or adjustments of watering schedule through Maxicom Technician;
• Perform sprinkler checks; solar and battery powered clock installation and maintenance; start-up and winterization of multiple irrigation systems;
• Use hydraulic manuals to determine pipe size and flow charts for number of heads, spacing, and guarantee correct amount of pressure;
• Assist in tree plantings in park/athletic facilities;
• Read and understand construction drawings, specifications, and as-built plans;
• Work with outside groups and Maxicom Technician to adjust watering schedule based on special events in the park/athletic facility;
• Supervise seasonal employees; educate on correct and safe use of all small equipment used in the field of Park/Athletic Field Maintenance; schedule employees based on scheduled holidays, weather, and time off, to achieve the desired esthetics of the facilities;
• Follow established safety policies and practices.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

• Employee may have frequent contact with the public-in person, via email/telephone; and may experience adverse or confrontational situations with internal/external customers;
• Employee must be able to work both indoors and outdoors in any weather condition;
• Employee will be exposed to various types of machinery noise - some levels are excessive;
• Typical hearing protection will be provided;
• Exposure to hazardous chemicals;
• May occasionally stand on concrete for long periods of time;
• Frequent and inflexible deadlines;
• Employee may be asked to drive personal vehicle for business purposes;
• Employee is subject to driving City vehicle in all weather conditions;
• Employee may be required to conduct business in alternate locations within City buildings or field sites, sometimes in formal settings;
• Requires ability to perform multiple tasks at one time with frequent interruptions;
• May be required to work evenings, weekends or holidays to cover events, Saturday work days or emergencies;
• Environment is dangerous to having considerable hazards reflect a frequent exposure to conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury; constant exposure to blood borne and air borne pathogens and human feces; exposure to cleaning chemicals, ice melt, paint fumes, fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides; exposure to extreme temperature conditions ranging from below zero to above 100 degrees; working with power equipment, heavy equipment, sharp objects, and mowers; exposure to illegal, and criminal activity in parks, (e.g., gangs, bomb making materials, drugs, graffiti, vandalism, and contaminated furniture);
• Communication skills enough to hear and convey information to/from the public via telephone and in person;
• Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs) and use of medium weight tools; ability to lift heavy objects; large bags of grass/fertilizer/ice melt/concrete, full trash bags, and pieces of equipment; ability to operate heavy equipment including mowers, loaders and tractors; ability to work in awkward positions involving ladders, bucket trucks, and working in small cramped areas associated with repairing irrigation; performing vault entry for startup and winterization of irrigation systems; minor electrical and plumbing works as needed; setting up and taking down soccer goals multiple times a year, including the drilling of anchors in the ground to prevent injury of falling soccer goals; must be in good enough physical condition to handle working in the wide range of weather conditions, whether shoveling snow in the below zero temperatures, or digging a hole when the temperature is over 100 degrees;
• The essential functions of this job require frequent hearing and repetitive motion; continuously sitting and talking; crouching, feeling, fingering, reaching, standing, and walking;
• May occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs;
• Vision enough to interpret computer screens and documents to assist the public and complete work assignments; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus;
• Manual dexterity enough to accurately input, retrieve and verify work assignments; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms; and operate tools, vehicles, and equipment;
• Flexibility enough to bend, twist and reach as to load and unload equipment, supplies or tools;
• The employee is occasionally required to sit for long periods of time.
