Position Status: Seasonal

Position Summary

Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks to maintain parks, forest, trails, and/or cemeteries for the City of Cañon City.

  • Performs grounds maintenance, landscaping, and tree maintenance tasks in city parks, cemetery, and rights-of-way. Picks up litter, removes trash, rakes leaves, clears brush, operates irrigation systems, and mows grass. Performs rough carpentry, electrical, and plumbing tasks to install, repair, and maintain irrigation systems. Cleans, repairs, and maintains public buildings, facilities, parks, public restrooms, campgrounds, recreational facilities, and cemetery.
  • Operates equipment such as trimmers, mowers, sprayers, power rakes, aerators, trash compactors, chippers, and chainsaws to improve, maintain, and repair parks, trails, and/or cemeteries and to plant, prune, or remove trees. Monitors equipment operation and reports repair and replacement needs. Performs routine maintenance and repairs on small equipment such as chainsaws, mowers, and weed eaters.
  • Assists with storm clean up, park patrol, and enforcing park rules and regulations.
  • Answers routine questions from the public related to park, cemetery, and forestry areas.
  • Provides excellent customer service to external and internal customers including but not limited to effectively listening and communicating, providing accurate information, offering solutions, assisting in resolution, and ensuring timely follow up as needed.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the mission, policies, goals, and procedures of Cañon City relating to park, cemetery, and forestry, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of the practices and methods of operating equipment such as trimmers, mowers, sprayers, power rakes, aerators, snowplows, trash compactors, dump trucks, loaders, trenchers, chippers, and chainsaws.
  • Knowledge of safe use of hand tools and power tools such as electric saws, drills, cutters, chain saws, shovels, and rakes.
  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets for hazardous materials used in park maintenance, cemetery, and forestry operations.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent customer service. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to build effective relationships as needed with employees, government officials, contractors, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as trimmers, mowers, sprayers, power rakes, aerators, trash compactors, chippers, and chainsaws.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and repairs on small equipment such as chainsaws, mowers, and weed eaters.
  • Ability to perform rough carpentry, electrical, and plumbing tasks to install, repair, and maintain irrigation systems.
  • Ability to perform repair and maintenance duties in public buildings, facilities, parks, and cemeteries.
  • Ability to perform burial duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written directions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Familiar with basic computer functions.
  • Skilled in planting, pruning, and removing trees.
  • Skilled in improving, maintaining, and repairing parks, trails, and/or cemeteries.
  • Skilled in grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Skilled in using hand tools.

Minimum Qualification(s):

Experience

  • One (1) year of experience in construction, general labor, agriculture, or related field preferred.
  • Any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.

  • High School diploma or equivalent

This position is a physically demanding position that requires the ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, to be able to move objects up to 100 pounds, to work in hazardous environments under all weather conditions. May be exposed to loud noise and hazards for significant periods of time.

Additional Information:

  • This position will typically work Monday – Friday but will flex to working weekends and evenings based on seasonal, organizational or event needs.
  • Travel within the City of Cañon City and Fremont County will be required.
  • Occasional extension of the work day to meet deadlines may be required.
