The position manages the facilities and grounds of City of Carbondale public parks including Turley Park, Evergreen Park, Tatum Heights Park, Superblock, and Pyles Fork Greenway. The supervisor manages full-time and seasonal staff that are responsible for grounds maintenance, preparation and maintenance of athletic fields (including field layout and striping, turf and infield maintenance, mowing, and coordinating amenities needed by the Carbondale Junior Sports leagues), cleaning/open-close/maintenance of restrooms, playgrounds, operates and transports equipment, and other duties as needed to ensure that all park facilities are well-maintained. Plans and organizes staff according to event schedules, which include evenings and weekends. Coordinates work with other City divisions such as Forestry, Maintenance & Environmental Services, Building Maintenance, and Engineering. This position requires a minimum of five days/forty hours work per week, some of which may be scheduled during holidays, evenings, and weekends.

Exercises supervision over subordinate personnel that consists of full-time, seasonal, and internship positions; helps with recruitment of open positions; trains and evaluates employees.
Assists in budget preparation and monitors and controls expenditures; makes recommendations to the City Manager for community investment projects.
Mowing and maintaining turf grass, applying pesticides, preparing athletic fields for practice and league play.
Keeping the grounds and structures free of graffiti, litter and all other debris.
Works with and operates various equipment to include trucks and trailers, mowers, ATV/UTV, and small equipment and hand tools used in the maintenance of parks.
Checking the parks for vandalism and making necessary minor repairs; reporting all vandalism and work directly with the Police Department to control.
Maintaining all facilities within parks to include restrooms, shelters, playgrounds, fencing, sidewalks, picnic equipment, and parking areas.
Scheduling maintenance work, procedures, and keeping time records as required.
Making regular inspections of all areas of parks and assigning work as needed to make improvements.
Keeping the grounds free of all debris at all times.
Reporting and correcting all hazards and undesirable conditions immediately.
Performing preventative maintenance on all equipment; ensuring that needed equipment or facilities are inspected as required; maintain inspection logs.
Keeping time records, attendance records and other reports as requested.
Support all aspects of the City's safety program.
Must be able to resolve conflicts and differences among staff.
Must be a good communicator and possess the ability to provide good
representation as a City employee to the public.

Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned for the overall operation of Parks and Recreation.

Work Environment: Work is performed primarily outdoors with prolonged standing; while exposed to extreme weather conditions to include heat, cold, sun, snow, rain, wind, and ice; while outside for long periods of time; and, while being exposed to various chemicals to include fertilizers, pesticides, cleaning agents, fuels, etc.

Physical Demands: Work requires frequent physical effort such as standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects of moderate weight 15-49 pounds for short durations, and infrequent lifting of objects up to 100 pounds. Work also requires the employee to perceive and/or discriminate colors, sounds, depth, and texture.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Three years of park or facilities management, landscaping, horticulture, forestry or grounds maintenance experience, including two years of supervisory experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, but must include two years of supervisory experience. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Knowledge and experience in lawn care and lawn care equipment. Demonstration of exceptional customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible leadership. Must be able to pass police background check and drug screening. Fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
