At this level, the Paralegal/Legal Assistant III has knowledge and participates in the substantive

development of the defined case. In this capacity, the contractor typically performs the

following:

Conducts legal research and drafts acceptable substantive pleadings.

Drafts and reviews motions and responses to defense pleadings.

Reviews and edits draft of substantive legal documents drafted by attorneys, paralegal

specialists and other support staff members.

Conducts interviews of law enforcement or reviews police paperwork, to compile facts,

statements, witnesses and evidence pertinent to the case.

Prepares appropriate case summaries to assist the AUSA in preparation for pre-trial

motions hearings and/or trial.

Reviews and compiles reports, exhibits, photos, recordings, electronic surveillance, and

other case materials for case organization, redaction, and disclosure.

Responsible for tracking the disclosure and discovery sent to/corresponds with defense attorneys as to the dissemination of said disclosure.

Assists with trial preparation, trial presentation, and organization by organizing files,

disclosure, and evidence summaries, as well as coordinating trial exhibits with automated

litigation support.

Use established network or mainframe databases, e.g., JUSTIS Westlaw, Lexis, RCIS,

Automated Papering System (APS), Automated Trial Preparation (ATP), performs data

searches, report design, and other data retrieval assignments. Reports may be of a

recurring nature or of a special, one-time nature based on user information requirements.

Prepares and submits legal pleadings, forms, reports, correspondence, and other

documents are prepared and submitted within established deadlines.

Provides procedural and office support services for one or more AUSAs of the defined

case. Services may include:

Receives and reviews incoming correspondence and forwards each item to the

appropriate AUSA or to other staff based on a knowledge of the duties and functions

of the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) - Receives telephone calls and

visitors, screening those which can be handled without help. Personally, takes care of

many matters and questions relating to office functions, procedures and practices.

Maintains legal and general office files.

Reviews, screens, and controls incoming mail. Independently deals with those

matters addressed to the unit that do not require the attention of legal staff by

referring such to appropriate other staff members, or personally performing the work

needed to resolve the matter.

Reviews outgoing correspondence for procedural and grammatical accuracy, format,

and presentation. Brings errors to the attention of the writer.

Produces written documents utilizing a range of office automation software. Retrieves

required information from various files and records and prepares legal documents with

complicated formatting. Ensures proper spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and

grammar. Consults with document author to resolve questionable material.

Using office software, provides automated litigation assistance to attorneys by preparing

charts and other specialized materials relating to trial preparation and presentations.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Specialized experience is defined as experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge,

skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or

related to the position to be filled.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $29.00 - $31.00 per hour
