The Civil Litigation Section is primarily responsible for representing the City and County of Denver, its officials, and employees in civil lawsuits alleging civil rights and other constitutional violations, as well as other matters involving personal injury and property damage.
The Civil Litigation Section is responsible for handling most tort and civil rights actions brought against the City, its officials, and employees, except for claims and lawsuits involving the Denver International Airport and the Department of Human Services. Attorneys in the Section prepare and defend against civil actions for which governmental immunity is waived under the Colorado Governmental Immunity Act, including allegations of personal injury, property damage, and dangerous conditions, and civil rights lawsuits brought pursuant to 42 U.S.C. Section 1983, the ADA, and the newly enacted Colorado Law Enforcement Integrity Act. Attorneys are also responsible for appeals arising from assigned civil cases in the Colorado Court of Appeals, Colorado Supreme Court, and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Collectively, the Section handles approximately 120 lawsuits, including appeals, and over 800 claims annually.
The Paralegal II primarily performs paraprofessional legal work by assisting attorneys with research, analysis, drafting various legal documents, and preparation for hearings and trials. The Litigation Section is seeking an individual with experience in civil litigation in state and federal court, as well as appeals. This job is well-suited for a skilled, self-starting, and organized paralegal who thrives in a cooperative team setting.
Job responsibilities:
  • Performs lead work as necessary, provides work instruction, assists with difficult or unusual assignments, resolves problems encountered during daily operations and determines appropriate solutions
  • Conducts research and studies in order to summarize laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities for use in the preparation of cases, opinions, pleadings, briefs, and other documentation
  • Assists with case investigations and assists attorneys at depositions and trials in the preparation of motions, briefs, pleadings, and exhibits. Provides immediate research and document retrieval when called upon during trial (using trial document management software) and post-trial proceedings
  • Collects, compiles, organizes, and analyzes various data for use in reports and documentation using Bates-stamping, redaction, de-duplication, indexing, and case discovery
  • Drafts complaints, affidavits, motions, interrogatories, and other pleadings connected with trial preparation and/or discovery
  • Provides paraprofessional legal support services, including managing case documentation/organization through the entire case
  • Calendars deadlines and checks legal citations by proofreading for substance and format, including conformance with approved standards, and prepares witness and exhibit binders for depositions, hearings, and trial
  • Responds to client inquiries and performs document management
  • Provides support functions for document control, and coordinates exhibits and witnesses during trials and hearings
  • Assists with locating witnesses and issuing subpoenas and subpoena duces tecum for appearances at depositions and trials
  • Prepares correspondence and legal documents requiring thorough knowledge of the Federal and State Rules of Civil Procedure, Federal and State Rules of Evidence, Federal and State Rules of Appellant Procedure, legal format, terminology, and procedures
  • Provides administrative legal support services by using various reporting and documentation systems, as needed
About You
We are looking for a team player who is detail-oriented and wants to be a part of a team of professionals whose primary focus is legal support. You must be willing to take the initiative, be dependable, and think critically. The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications:
  • At least two (2) years, preferably three (3) years, of experience with complex civil litigation in both state and federal court, including handling all aspects of a case through trial and on appeal
  • Knowledge of electronic court filing procedures and rules for state and federal courts, including appellate courts
  • Experience with trial preparation and in trial support in both state and federal courts
  • Civil Litigation Law experience, either affirmative or defensive, with a foundational knowledge of the insurance claims process
  • Drafts, issues, and monitors litigation holds. Performs keyword and other searches on electronic discovery platforms, perform first pass reviews for documents that are potentially relevant or subject to privilege.
  • Experience with and demonstrated proficiency with the following: MS-Office 365; Adobe-Pro; Westlaw or LexisNexis; legal document management software; E-discovery software
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients, attorneys, and other staff members
  • Strong attention to detail with a willingness to work in a cooperative culture
  • Willing to participate in organizational initiatives such as diversity training sessions, mentorship programs, and agency committees

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of full-time paralegal experience in a public or private law office, not including internships.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
