As a Packaging Engineer, you will be responsible for raw material and finished goods packaging design, closely monitoring and driving packaging engineering initiatives and processes from concept through mass production. You will be an integral part of executing packaging build strategies, including DFM innovation, new product development, execution efficiency, and documenting best practices. You will be a critical escalation path for packaging process issues and work closely with global suppliers to ensure effective cross-functional collaboration.


Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development and performance testing.
  • Troubleshoot new / existing packaging problems involving designs, materials & processes and provide creative, timely and cost-effective solutions.
  • Analyze engineering drawings / specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements and types of materials required for packaging.
  • Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews.
  • Design part packaging to optimize unloading and reduce waste.
  • Work closely with global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations and sourcing.
  • Identify & implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation and storage.
  • Own engineering development, test, certification and production of final packaging solutions.
  • Work closely with Engineering to optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance & compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements.
  • Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs.
  • Work with the design department to ensure that the product designs are optimized for packaging optimization.
  • Reduce unpacking time and waste for raw material orders.
  • Manage Packaging drawings, assembly specs, SOPs and documentation
  • Conduct tests and engineering studies to validate the robustness and proper performance of new packaging. Identify and reduce packaging risks.

  • A Bachelor's degree in mechanical or packaging engineering is required.
  • Must have 7+ years of experience in industrial or consumer packaging.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, ISTA etc.), drafting and specification standards is essential.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in 3D CAD software is needed (Solidworks preferred).
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have good communication skills, oral & written.
  • Understanding of process & quality improvement concepts is needed.
  • Rapid prototyping experience.
  • Demonstrated project management skills / experience; project management certification is a plus.
  • Good reasoning ability is required to solve a wide range of business problems.
  • Able to apply statistical calculations, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, and sampling theory as well as algebra, linear equations, and other analytics as required.
  • Able to understand and utilize management reports and plans
  • Knowledge of shock, vibration, and the effect of temperature variation in product protection & package design
  • Experience in the following manufacturing/material processes: Rigid Box, Paper Pulp Molded Fiber, Thermoforming, Corrugated, Labels, Foam, Shrink Wrap, Films, Adhesives
  • Knowledge of packaging test, certification, manufacturing, printing & production processes
  • Knowledge of statistics, process controls and tolerance analysis
