Position: OT/Therapy Aide

Occupational therapy or therapy assistants are responsible for helping teachers and therapists complete daily tasks within a special education school, specifically the classroom environment. They support classroom activities and provide individual guidance to special education students with learning and/or behavioral challenges. They have the opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary integrated therapy model and reinforce therapeutic activities with students of varying skill levels.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with teachers and therapist to follow and implement the class schedule.
  • Assist teachers and therapists with preparation of classroom and therapeutic materials to facilitate smooth operation of the classroom.
  • Ensure the classroom environment is safe and clean.
  • Oversee students during non-classroom times including in-between classes, during lunch, and on-field excursions.
  • Collaborate with teachers and therapists to promote an optimal learning environment
  • Document student progress
  • Complying with state, school, and class rules and regulations
  • Attending all training classes, required professional development, and staff meetings

Ensure safety of students in all environments. Assist in facilitation of independence, social awareness, language, and appropriate behavior.

Responsible for other student concerns that arise, and communicate concerns to PM and/or teacher. Understand and deliver appropriate behavioral plan for each student working collaboratively with the teachers and behaviorists.

Assist in collecting student data. Assist students with school and classroom activities, e.g.: lunch, playground, bus load, personal care, toileting.

Collaborate with SLP’s, OT’s, PT’s, BCBA’s teachers and social workers Participate in staff meetings and in-service training as requested.

All other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands: Constant standing or walking. Requires ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Bends, reaches, lifts, carries, twists, pushes, pulls, and handles equipment when performing duties. Repetitive wrist/arm movements when on

vocational site. Manual and finger dexterity and motor coordination are necessary. Able to reach and operate

equipment and systems safely and effectively.

Other Competencies (skills, abilities, behavior): Ability to understand and follow both written and oral

instructions. Adaptability to perform routine, repetitive tasks within a specific period of time. Prioritizes work

assignments to be completed within time requirements. Must demonstrate a positive and caring attitude toward

students, clients, and staff. Must remain flexible and adaptable in order to meet department needs.
