Job summary
Responsible for supporting transmission operations which includes maintaining transmission system models and associated online drawings and maps. Will be responsible for performing reliability assessments for real-time and near-term planning while working closely with the reliability coordinators and neighboring transmission operations groups.

Platte River is seeking to hire one operations engineer for placement at either this junior, or a senior level (see Senior Operations Engineer job posting).

Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Models the mission, vision, values and culture of the organization
  • Provides 24/7 support and technical assistance for the power system transmission operators during real-time system events
  • Performs operating and planning assessments including coordinating and reviewing the impacts of forced and planned outages, operating contingencies, and planned responses
  • Develops and maintains operator training scenarios on a training simulator in conjunction with the operations training coordinator
  • Provides technical support and assistance with external teams including the regional reliability coordinator, balancing authorities, and neighboring transmission system operations groups
  • Develops written transmission system reports associated with the operation of regional facilities
  • Supports model development, testing, maintenance, and validation efforts for real time contingency analysis (RTCA) software
  • Coordinates automatic and manual loadshedding programs with applicable owner communities
  • Maintains NERC and WECC compliance reporting and documentation
  • Maintains familiarity with and follows the FERC standards of conduct
  • This role is classified as a transmission function employee and actively is engaged in transmission
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Ability to setup, perform, and analyze results of transmission system steady-state power flow and dynamic transient stability studies
  • Knowledge and background in PSS/E and/or Powerworld power system analysis software with automation experience utilizing the Python programming language
  • Knowledge of transmission system steady-state and transient stability modeling of generation resources, transmission lines, and applicable substation equipment
  • Knowledge of NERC/WECC reliability standards
  • Ability to collaborate with and desire to seek input from internal team members; skilled in seeking and valuing diverse opinions and ideas
  • Ability to multi-task, shifting focus to emerging priorities as needed
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to relay complex information
  • Ability to apply problem solving, critical thinking, and independent decision-making skills, with consistent attention to detail
  • Ability to make sound decisions with consideration for potential impacts of decisions to the overall organization
Qualifications
Education and licenses
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field of study from an accredited university
  • Current valid driver’s license and ability to remain insurable under the vehicle liability policy
Preferred work experience and education
  • Two or more years of experience in engineering or operation of electric transmission systems
  • One year of experience in transmission system planning or operations
Physical demands
  • Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal.
Hazards
  • Minimal exposure to hazards are typically found in general office environment where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident
Work environment
  • Exposure to routine office noise and equipment
Bi-weekly salary range for position: $3,992- $5,489(placement DOQ)
(range if annualized: $103,786 - $142,704)
