Job description

Become a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist with the Office of Human Resources Management, Safety and Occupational Health Division at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Location negotiable (locations listed under duties section below).

Typical duties include:

  • Advises and assists in planning and direction of occupational safety and health program activities. Plans and executes a continuing program of periodic inspections throughout the assigned geographical area.
  • Investigates and analyzes cases of property damage, accidents and incidents, personal injury, and occupational disease exposure to determine cause and cost. Identifies, directs, and where possible, conducts safety training for all assigned employees and supervisors.
  • Administers a Safety Management Information System to report all job-related injuries, illnesses, and property damage.
  • Utilizes risk management techniques to identify job hazards by conducting job hazard analysis, identifying engineering controls, administrative controls, or personal protection equipment to ensure a job is performed safely. Provides specific job hazard safety mitigation strategies associated with job hazard analysis, as needed.

Salary and Benefits

This position starts at a salary of $82,830.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $107,680.00 (GS-12, Step 10) with promotion potential to $107,680.00 (GS-12 Step 10). Refer to the official Job Opportunity Announcement (JOA) for details about qualifications requirements.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Managing safety or occupational health program elements and recommending policy to higher levels of management.
  • Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements.
  • Developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards.
  • Developing or implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include all the above and/or:

  • Analyzing or evaluating new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards.
  • Designing or modifying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems to control or eliminate hazards.
  • Conducting inspections for compliance with established policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards.
  • Training personnel in safety or occupational health subjects.
  • Work in occupational fields such as industrial hygienist, safety engineer, fire prevention engineer, health physicist, and occupational health nurse.

Education:

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
