The Western Tidewater Health District WIC Program is seeking an enthusiastic qualified individual to work in our WIC Office as a Nutritionist Assistant. This position will provide program support to the Nutritionist and/or Nutritionist Associate. This position is based in Suffolk but the Western Tidewater WIC Program services the City of Franklin, the City of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County as well as Pughsville. This Nutritionist Assistant position may be required to work at the other offices within the District on occasion.
Duties will include:
  • answer and return client calls
  • instruct and assist clients with form completion
  • inform clients about WIC program guidelines
  • routinely obtain blood sample/ finger sticks from infants, children and women
  • schedule WIC appointments
  • maintain WIC records
  • compile and access WIC reports and secure and verify information needed for WIC income eligibility determination.
The Nutritionist Assistant is also required to participate in community outreach to promote/encourage program involvement for eligible clients and complete required training and developmental opportunities as assigned.

THIS IS A WAGE POSITION, limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12 month period of May 1- April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12 month period. This position offers no state benefits

Minimum Qualifications
Experience with working with a diverse population and good customer service skills
Experience with scheduling appointments, especially with computer applications or web based systems.
Experience with record keeping and data entry
Experience determining client program eligibility
Effective communication skills, including oral and written communication
Ability to work in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent – Preferred
Experience working with the WIC program – Preferred
Ability to maintain confidentiality as well as document clearly and accurately -Preferred
Training or coursework in dietetics, food services or related field – Preferred
Experience obtaining anthropometric and hemoglobin measurements -Preferred

Special Requirements
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. The selected candidate must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment, if applicable (Va. Code § 2.2-3114). Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year’s seasonal influenza vaccination.
