Arlington Public Schools (APS) requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless a medical or religious exemption is approved. Human Resources announces an opening for a Network Analyst position in the Network & Infrastructure Department. The Network Analyst is a full-time twelve-month position starting at grade E-08 260 days. Placement on this range is dependent upon qualifications and relevant experience.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

The Network Analysts will assist in managing the installation, operation, and maintenance of local and wide area networks, servers and other network services. The incumbent will report to the Director of Technology Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK: (May not include all duties performed – These are intended as an illustration of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)

  • Provides support including the configuration, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of switches, wireless, servers (VMWare, Mac OSX, Windows, Linux, & Unix-based), and related hardware and software.
  • Installs and maintains application software on the network. Advises staff on effective utilization of existing network resources and tools.
  • Analyzes network components to identify potential improvements and to make modifications in accordance with changing requirements. Assists in the study, evaluation, and selection of network hardware and software.
  • Monitors and troubleshoots networks and works with Information Services, Arlington County Government personnel, and vendors to resolve any problems.
  • Provides assistance to network users; develops documentation, equipment operating instructions, and trouble-shooting procedures.

EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience working with students, families, and staff from various cultural and linguistic background.
  • Working knowledge of cabling infrastructure, including Category 5/5e/6 UTP, multimode fiber-optic cabling, and EIA-TIA 568 specifications.
  • Skills in Macintosh Operating Systems (OSX).
  • Working knowledge of network hardware and protocols, including Ethernet switches, NICs, 802.11 wireless, spanning tree, and 802.11Q VLANs. • Working knowledge of computer hardware, including standard installation, service & maintenance processes.
  • Working knowledge of server operating systems such as Linux, Windows Server, OpenBSD, and Apple OSX Server. Working knowledge of basic IP protocols & services such as DNS, DHCP, SSH, SMTP, and HTTP. Working knowledge of routing, firewalls, and IP subnetting.
  • Knowledge of network services such as LDAP, Active Directory, NCP, CIFS, and SSL/IPsec VPNs. Knowledge of network application services such as Apache/Tomcat, IIS, Microsoft Exchange, and Workstation deployment systems ie. (KACE). Knowledge of storage technologies such as Fibre Channel and iSCSI.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware Virtual Infrastructure.
  • Awareness of network security issues and technologies. • Advanced knowledge of all levels of Microsoft Windows Workstation OS.
  • Experience with scripting languages, such as Perl, Unix shell scripting, PHP, Python, C#, Ruby. Powershell, VBS, AppleScript/Shell scripting.
  • Minimum of three years increasingly responsible experience installing, configuring and supporting Ethernet networks.
  • Ability to write effectively in order to develop technical documentation and user manuals. Ability to coordinate work with user offices. Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in analyzing networked systems and to make sound recommendations and modifications.
  • Ability to work independently or function as a member of a team, depending on the type of project. Flexibility and adaptability to deal with changing technologies and priorities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other APS employees, contractors, vendors, and county employees. Ability to deal with problems in a courteous, tactful manner.
  • Ability to lift, move, and connect computer equipment. Sufficient mobility and endurance to circulate throughout the county to carry out essential functions. Prolonged sitting before computer screens, visual acuity.
  • Willingness to work in an office environment with exposure to normal, everyday risks. Willingness to work under stressful situations, meeting deadlines and with frequent interruptions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a computer-related degree preferred, supplemented by technical training in the operation of wide-area networks.
  • Valid driver’s license and a vehicle to provide own transportation.
  • Certifications (Microsoft, Juniper, SANS/GIAC, CompTIA, Apple etc) highly desirable.
  • Experience using Mac X tools - Deploy Studio (create and deploy images), Casper Suite (client management OS X and IOS), setup VM Fusion for Mac, remote Desktop utility.
  • Experience Active Directory/Open directory in mac environment.
