City Experiences is seeking a Naturalist for our Boston Harbor City Cruises operation.

About the Opportunity:

The Naturalist is responsible for narrating entire whale watch trips which includes a safety talk, harbor tour, whale identification, and messing that includes ecological, educational, and conservation topics.

About You:

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody City Experiences’ RESPECT Service System.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Narrating entire whale watch trips which includes a safety talk, harbor tour, whale identification, and messing that includes ecological, educational, and conservation topics.
  • Performing a sound check, mic battery check, and set up of video displays before whale watch begins.
  • Supervision of NEAq Intern(s) while they perform daily tasks.
  • Performing and coordinating educational outreach with intern around the vessel before and after trip, using educational biofacts.
  • Reporting any North Atlantic Right Whale Sightings in accordance with BHC Right Whale Policy. Reporting whale harassments events and dead/entangled whales to the Coastguard/CCS in coordination with the whale watch captain.
  • Coordinating whale positions, distance, and species with the whale watch captain over the radio.
  • Being aware of North East Regional Whale Watch Guidelines, Right Whale Seasonal/Dynamic Management Areas, Whale Alert Status, and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
  • Performing photo identification of marine mammals and coordinate collection of field data with interns, using BHC and CCS data protocols.
  • Answering customer questions and providing exceptional customer service.
  • Uploading GPS data, photos, and photosheets daily onto network. Cleaning and taking proper care of cameras and gear post/pre-trip.
  • Writing daily blog including photos.
  • Helping keep office clean and tidy.
  • Quality checking and keeping track of intern submitted data, enter photo data properties into IMatch.
  • Uploading photos of calves, unknowns, sightings list, and other various catalogs.
  • Attending mandatory meetings and trainings.
  • Additional job duties assigned

Requirements & Qualifications:

At least one prior whale watch season of experience working as a naturalist, or whale watch education/research intern, preferably in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and/or the Gulf of Maine. Preference given to former New England Aquarium Education and Research Interns.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Science, Biology, Environmental, Zoology, or Educational related field.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Photography and field data collections experience.
  • The ability to multitask and work in a team setting.
  • Must be able to work in rough sea conditions, and in all variety of weather conditions.
