Duties

The employment periods are listed below but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

  • Denali Park: Anticipated employment period is May to September.
  • Toklat: Anticipated employment period is May to September.
As a Motor Vehicle Operator, the incumbent will:
  • Operate a variety of motor vehicles, including those having a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 32,000 pounds and towing trailers with a GVWR of greater than 10,000 pounds.
  • Operate vehicles on steep grades, winding roads, and varied mountainous terrain. Vehicles primarily include tractor trailers and dump trucks (some with dual transmissions), operated within close tolerances, driving and backing over uneven ground and in narrow or congested areas and between buildings and other vehicles.
  • Occasionally perform general laborer duties to include: washing vehicles and equipment; cleaning with push brooms, wheelbarrows, shovels, and rakes; loading and unloading supplies by hand or with forklifts or loader; operating chainsaws; and repairing road shoulders and ditches by hand.
  • May be required to work at odd hours, at night or very early in the morning, lift items weighing over 50 pounds, work in and around equipment and power tools, and work outdoors while exposed to temperature extremes.
  • Operate equipment in all types of weather conditions and on a variety of road surfaces, and is subject to noise, vibration, and exhaust fumes from equipment and vehicles.
  • The position may require living and working out of a remote road camp for several days at a time.

  • You must possess and maintain a current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with:
    • Tanker endorsements
    • No air brake restrictions
    • A current medical certificate
    • No pending disqualifying offenses

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Government housing may be available.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Applicants must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Additional information

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1039 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1039 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1039 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.

Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. Considerable physical effort may be required in backing of vehicles, to change tires, and make limited emergency repairs. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around equipment and power tools.

Working Conditions: Majority of the work is performed outdoors where incumbent will be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Required to operate equipment in all types of weather conditions and on a variety of road surfaces. Subject to noise, vibration and exhaust fumes from equipment and vehicles, and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.
