The Iowa Department of Transportation is looking for motivated Officers to join our Motor Vehicle Enforcement team! Officers will spend their days working to fulfill our Mission of Making Lives Better Through Transportation while living the core values of Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception.

Motor Vehicle Enforcement is a nationally recognized, pro-employee, progressive law enforcement agency. We need caring, relentless, thick-skinned, vigilantly driven professionals with a growth mindset. This is a specialized and technical field of law enforcement. It requires persons with attention to detail who are not afraid to get their hands dirty…literally.

Specific Law Enforcement Duties: Successful applicants interested in this state law enforcement officer position are expected to enforce all state traffic and criminal law. With primary focus in enforcement of the federal motor carrier safety regulations, hazardous materials regulations, vehicle size, vehicle weight, registration, fuel tax and driver’s license. MVE officers patrol highways in rural areas, in small town Iowa and large metropolitan cities. We staff 11 state weigh stations located in various locations across the state. You will be expected to enhance the safety of the public on days, nights, weekends, and holidays…in the sunshine, the rain and snow. You are expected to accomplish this as an educated, caring, professional affecting safety through education and enforcement action when necessary. It’s your job to preserve and protect Iowa’s infrastructure and highway systems each and every day.

Requirements:
Physical Fitness Testing
A successful candidate must meet Department of Public Safety’s Physical Standards and Minimum Hiring Requirements for Trooper II
Lifting: Occasionally lifts/lowers, carries objects (50 to 75 pounds), such as portable scales).
License: A valid driver's license must be possessed and maintained.

Other:
Travel: Overnight travel not regularly required.
Schedule: Rotating shifts
Training: Progressive multi-discipline law enforcement training, emphasis on personal growth mindset

PUSH-UP TEST (1 Minute)
The chest must come down and touch a fist placed under the applicant’s chest, then the arms must go to full extension to complete a push up. Women will not be allowed to complete this test with their knees on the ground unless they are in excess of 49 years of age.

SIT-UP TEST (1 Minute)
Hands must remain on or about the head. While in the up position, elbows should touch the knees or upper portion of the thigh. When in the down position, the back must come down so that shoulder blades touch the floor. Legs may be held for assistance.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Candidates for these positions, in accordance with Iowa Administrative Code 501, Chapter 2 must:

  • Be a United States citizen and a resident of Iowa (or intend to become a resident upon hire).
  • Be at least eighteen years of age at the time of hire.
  • Possess a valid driver's license issued by the State of Iowa (or be eligible to obtain one upon hire).
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency certificate.

Additional Qualification Requirements

In addition, a post-employment requirement of these positions is graduation and certification from an academy approved by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) Director and Council. Additional qualifications needed for admittance to an ILEA approved academy are as follows:

  • Pass drug-screening requirements.
  • Pass a background investigation (including a fingerprint search).
  • Have no felony convictions or involvement in crimes of moral turpitude.
  • Pass a physical agility test.
  • Willingness to use force when necessary to fulfill duties of job.
  • Have uncorrected visions of not less than 20/100 in both eyes (corrected to 20/20) and normal color vision.
  • Have normal hearing in each ear.
  • Is examined by a licensed physician or surgeon and meets the physical requirements necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer.
  • Pass cognitive and personality tests.
  • Pass a firearms qualifying test.
  • Pass a polygraph test.
  • All applicants must be at least eighteen years of age, be United States citizens, be an Iowa resident at time of employment, and possess a valid Iowa Driver's License.
