SUMMARY:
The Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library (AUC RWWL) supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world’s largest consortium of HBCUs—Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. Conveniently located and easily accessible to the campuses, the Woodruff Library is the center of the intellectual and social life at the Atlanta University Center.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
The AUC-RWWL is looking for a highly motivated individual seeking to gain experience broadening access and the discoverability of cultural heritage collections in full-time position. Working with the Archives Research Center, this position will assist with the processing, digitization and access of the Morehouse College Archival Collection. The Archival Assistant will support the Lead Archivist for Morehouse College in the arrangement, description, preservation, processing, and access of the Morehouse College Archival collection. The Archival Assistant will collaborate with the Lead Archivist to create inventories, assist with outreach, provide reference services in the Archives Research Center, and create description of the Collection and will report directly to the Lead Archivist.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in arranging and describing manuscript collections to provide access to researchers utilizing preservation and organizational techniques, processing procedures, and archival standards. This includes inventorying, labeling, re-housing, preserving, drafting series descriptions, and using the ArchivesSpace to create finding aids.
- Assists the with the basic preservation and processing of archival materials including re-housing and surface cleaning.
- Assists with the administrative needs of the archives, includes monitoring and ordering archives supplies.
- Assists with completing inventories, identification and packaging material.
- Assist with developing promotional and outreach materials related to the project including exhibition preparation, articles, presentations at professional conferences and blog posts; participates in team meetings, provides status updates, and project reports.
Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE:
- Knowledge of African American history.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work.
- Experience in an archives or reference department.
- Customer Service experience.
- Experience with digital technologies.
- Strong written and verbal communications, and computer skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.
- Experience with standard office software such as Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Sensitivity in handling fragile archival materials.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Commitment to working in a culturally diverse environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or substantial relevant library

Work Experience:
- Knowledge of African American history.
- Demonstrated knowledge of 20th century African American history, literature and culture, highly desirable.
- Ability to perform physical activities associated with the archival environment.
