Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Consults with engineer and other personnel regarding product information such as design, capacity and purpose, and types of material to be used to fabricate product.

Analyzes written specifications, drawings, rough sketches, and verbal instructions to plan layout and determine sequence of operations.

Selects metal stock and lays out design according to dimensions computed from scale drawings.

Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts or fixtures to meet special engineering or production needs typically through use of SolidWorks or equivalent software.

Tests experimental models under simulated operating conditions for such purposes as development, standardization, and feasibility of design.

Designs and makes own tooling typically through use of SolidWorks or equivalent software.

Writes machine programs either on the machine or typically through the use of MasterCam software or equivalent.

Evaluates experimental procedures and recommends changes or modifications for efficiency and adaptability to setup and production.

Works closely with production and technical staff to modify, rework or repair parts and fixtures.

Performs heat-treating.

Sets up and operates all CNC and manual metalworking machine tools such as lathe, milling machine or grinder to machine parts to specifications and verifies conformance of parts to specifications.

Creates set-up folders for repeat jobs following quality system criteria.

Mentors interns and apprentice candidates on proper use of equipment, safety, and best machining practices.

Performs all duties of Lead Machinist if assigned to production work cell.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); VoTech Trade School graduate or completion of an apprentice program in tooling, CNC machining and programming or equivalent is required. Minimum of 10 years experience in a machining related field is required. A high mechanical aptitude and working knowledge of materials, heat treating, castings and tool and fixture design are required.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints and machine drawings, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to present numerical data effectively and write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Gathers and analyzes information skillfully; Develops alternative solutions; Works well in group problem solving situations.

Computer Skills:

Possess basic computer skills and knowledge of CAD and CAM programming software such as Solidworks, MasterCam or other manufacturer software.
