SUMMARY

The scope of the Scientific, Research and Administrative Support Effort is to provide support to National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), Viral Gastroenteritis Branch (VGB) within the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The DVD prevents disease, disability, and death through immunization and by control of respiratory, enteric, and related viral diseases.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Microbiologist III applies specialized skills to conduct laboratory work including one or multiple of the following tasks:

  • Perform molecular virology studies (detection and typing and high-level characterization) on viral gastroenteritis viruses including rotavirus or norovirus and sapovirus
  • Evaluate multi-enteric pathogen diagnostic platforms for the detection of viruses, bacteria and parasites.
  • Participate in burden of disease studies of rotavirus or norovirus outbreaks, sporadic cases and birth cohorts.
  • Leading studies to evaluate novel diagnostic platforms for the detection and/or typing of gastroenteritis viruses.
  • Design and perform animal work to support immunology and vaccine projects.
  • Attend weekly team meetings, annual meetings, and other ad hoc meetings when necessary to provide information on current activities or to become familiar with current activities.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

No supervisory or management authority.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • M.S. with 5-9 years of experience or Ph.D with 0-4 years of experience
    • Doctoral degree in microbiology, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, or related field equivalent work experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, while maintaining the ability to respond to VGB requests
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize new research ideas for project research
  • Demonstrated skills and experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to successfully pass a federal background check and a drug screen
  • Cherokee Federal employees are included as covered employees in U.S. Presidential Executive Order 14042, which mandates Covid vaccines for federal contractors. Executive Order 14042 is currently blocked from enforcement pending court proceedings. Therefore, Cherokee Federal is halting the application of the mandate; however, if the injunction is lifted, Cherokee Federal will restore administration of the vaccine requirement.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work will be performed in a climate-controlled office and laboratory environment.
