Position Summary

Works under the direct supervision of the nurse/administrator/site manager/assistant site manager. Assures cleanliness of nurses stations, equipment, and medication carts. Assists in administration of medication and treatments.

Skills

Knowledge if HIPPA regulations and the ability to demonstrate accuracy in observation and communicate effectively are major prerequisites of working at the position of a certified medication technician.

Take the resident information in and verify the need for the requested medication

  • Scrutinize prescription to ensure the authenticity of the information
  • Administer requested medication to residents orally and through IVs
  • Educate residents in the self-administering of medication such as subcutaneous and oral medicines
  • Follow medication administering instructions provided by the physician in an accurate manner
  • Observe residents’ response to existing and new treatment plans and make decisions to perform intervention activities where required
  • Maintain accounting of all medications especially controlled substances
  • Create, maintain and update resident records and medication information on a regular basis
  • Write accurate reports regarding residents’ responses to administered medication
  • Maintain awareness of medication interactions and side effects
  • Take residents’ vitals such as blood pressure and pulse to determine changes brought about by new medication
  • Document reasons when a prescribed drug is not administered
  • Confer with residents’ physicians if in doubt about administering a particular medicine to a certain resident
  • Interview residents to determine their medical history and any drug allergies that they may have
  • Order medicines and supplies such as syringes, saline water, swabs and spirit
  • Maintain and restock medication inventories and waste any expired medication or supplies on an immediate basis


Acting as a CNA

1. When Medication Technicians are not actively dispensing medications or preparing medications for the next set of rounds, certified medication aides revert to the duties they share with other certified nurses' aides. Those consist of basic hands-on nursing care, such as bathing and feeding patients, helping them with toilet visits and basic hygiene, or supervising their participation in exercise or physical therapy. When functioning as a nursing aide, the aide is supervised by practical or registered nurses. Supervision for medication aides must come from the registered nurse acting as charge nurse for that shift. Medication Technicians must also Assist with other duties as directed and follow orders as directed by first line supervisor or other administrators.
