Schedule: Sunday- Wednesday; 7:00 p.m. - 5:30 a.m. (four 10-hour shifts).

DEPARTMENT MISSION: To provide quality laboratory services that are responsive to the expectations of physicians} employees, patients, and the community through continuous quality improvement.

PURPOSE: Performs routine and complex laboratory functions requiring adherence to technical procedures utilizing specified equipment. Assumes responsibility for accuracy of test results, working with minimal or no supervision. Provides corrective action for operations as necessary. Provides training as requested. Provides services in accordance with accepted standards, including all federal, state} and local regulations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs routine and complex assigned tasks in one section of the laboratory, including tasks of moderate to high complexity.* (35%)
  • Performs routine and complex assigned tasks in additional sections of the laboratory, including tasks of moderate to high complexity.* (15%)
  • Provides appropriate services to meet the needs of the department's customers as requested including but not limited to the provision of accurate and timely information.* (5%)
  • Maintains equipment, including scheduled, preventative and diagnostic maintenance as outlined in laboratory procedure and manufacturer user manuals.* (10%)
  • Participates in Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance activities as determined by the hospital including hospital operations improvement.* (5%)
  • Independently performs quality control procedures, documents results, and investigates and resolves abnormal results, with appropriate supervisory notification of activity.* (10%)
  • Evaluates current practice and make appropriate suggestions to improve productivity and enhance expense reduction to the Section Head; assists in the evaluation of new equipment; monitors the purchasing of laboratory supplies and inventory control. (5%)
  • Provides technical guidance for customers as it relates to laboratory procedures and operations. (3%)
  • Attends meetings inside and outside of the hospital as designated. Participates in professional activities and continuing education to maintain professional expertise. * (2%)
  • Clearly communicates and continuously supports the Mission and Values of Johnson Memorial Hospital.
  • Conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and hospital policies and procedures including Blood and Body Substance Precautions. *
  • Performs additional duties as required which relate to the function of the hospital.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Requires strong analytical and computer skills, a thorough understanding of laboratory operations including routine and specialized techniques and procedures in clinical laboratory science, the ability to operate moderate and complex laboratory equipment, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and knowledge of all applicable State and Federal regulations.
  • EQUIPMENT USED: Laboratory instrumentation (such as centrifuges, cell washers, and chemistry, hematology, and coagulation analyzers), specimen collection equipment, personal computer, photocopier, facsimile machine, 10-key calculator, multi-line telephone, hospital information system, laser printer, and other general office equipment.
  • MENTAL DEMAND: Requires reading (documents, instrument results, and policies), detailed work, confidentiality, problem solving, language, math, reasoning, verbal communication, written communication, customer contact, multiple current tasks, constant interruptions, analytical skills related to the evaluation of data, ability to work under pressure in a fast paced work environment, and the ability to cope with confrontation and assist with problem resolution.
  • COMMUNICATIONS: Interacts with internal customers which includes, but not limited to, employees, management staff, physicians, volunteers, and students. Interacts ,vith external customers which includes, but not limited to, home health agencies, physicians offices, sales representatives, colleagues in the industry, patients, and regulatory agency representatives. Interacts as often as daily with both internal and external customers by face-to-face, telephone, or written communication. Key customers of this position include employees, management staff, patients, and physicians. Performance expectations of the key customers for this position include timely and accurate responses as weH as courteous and respectful communication.
  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Minimal to moderate physical effort, including bending, crouching, kneeling, cleaning, balancing, lifting, carrying, reaching, twisting, writing, squatting, sitting, standing, talking, hearing, handling, walking, and seeing. May require lifting of reagents or other stock supplies for storage and use. Requires the ability to differentiate color and the ability to operate laboratory instruments.
    • The typical work day involves the following strength requirements:
      • Light work: exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a clean, well-lighted area, with potential for exposure to hazardous materials including chemical and biohazardous materials.
    • Position is listed as Category I: Constant exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING: MT: Bachelor's Degree in Medical technology or in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences from an accredited college or university plus one year of training in an approved school of medical technology or equivalent applicable experience. Certification as a Medical Technologist (or equivalent) preferred. MLT: Associate's Degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician plus one year of training in an approved school of medical technology or equivalent applicable experience. Certification as a :Medical Laboratory Technician ( or equivalent) preferred.
  • POPULATION BEING SERVED BY POSITION: Serves a population which includes all age categories, e.g. neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults) and geriatric adults.

CLIA REQUIREMENTS - Testing Personnel Responsibilities for High Complexity Testing
The testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing) test performance and for reporting test results.

  • Each individual performs only those high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education) training or experience, and technical abilities.
  • Each individual performing high complexity testing must-
    • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing) test analyses) reporting and maintaining records of patients test results;
    • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens;
    • Adhere to the laboratory is quality control policies) document all quality control activities, insh·ument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed;
    • Follow the laboratOry's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance;
    • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director;
    • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications; and
    • If qualified under Section IV, qualification code TPH7, must perform high complexity testing only under the onsite, direct supervision of a general supervisor qualified under Section V supervisor qualified under Section V.
