Job Duties

Western State Hospital is seeking a Medical Director to supervise and coordinate all activities of the Medical Staff of Western State Hospital. This position is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of all patients in WSH, according to the Bylaws of the State Board of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).

Minimum Qualifications

A license to practice medicine in Virginia is required.
Graduation from approved psychiatric residency & board certification by American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology is required.
A federal license to prescribe medications is required.
Completion of medical school and approved training program in psychiatry is required.
Established post-residency experience in inpatient psychiatry is required.
Previous experience in a medical staff leadership position (Medical staff president, Chair of medical staff committee) or other administrative experience, is required.
Established teaching/supervisory experience at the medical student and/or resident level is required.
Comprehensive knowledge of inpatient psychiatry, as well as administrative ability to provide general oversight to the clinical functioning of the hospital, is required.
The ability to organize and implement interdisciplinary treatment teams is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Faculty appointment/affiliation in the Department of Psychiatric Medicine, UVA School of Medicine is preferred and supported. Bilingual in Spanish preferred. Veteran preferred.
