Duties

  • May assist the supervisor in developing plans for storage and arrangement of stock in accordance with agency policy and regulations.
  • Receives, stores, issues and preserves materials and determines the sequences for loading materials and organizing incoming shipments for maximizing space, safety and damage protection.
  • Operates electric, gasoline or diesel-powered forklifts to lift loads less than 10,000 pounds and as high as 168 inches. Serves as trainer for agency Material Handling Equipment (e.g. standup, sit-down forklift, wire-guide technology, etc).
  • Utilizes current industry technology such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) wireless technology. Trains subordinates on RFID technology using hand-held devices and administering the Warehouse Management System (WMS).
  • Serves as a Project Officer Technical Representative (POTR) on warehouse services contracts.
  • Inspects and defines standards of quality and performance; reviews work in progress or upon completion; adjusts work plans, assignments and methods to reduce or control costs and to accomplish the work as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Qualifications

To qualify for this WG-6 Materials Handler (Forklift) position your resume must describe duties you perform that demonstrate:
A. the Screen Out AND
B. the five individual Job Elements AND

A. SCREEN OUT: ABILITY TO DO MATERIALS HANDLER WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION

REQUIREMENT: Materials Handlers receive, store and retrieve a wide variety of supplies and equipment in a warehouse setting using mechanized, automated and manual equipment without more than normal supervision.

At a minimum, your work must not require more than regular spot checks or guidance during progress and upon completion.

Materials Handlers must have a fundamental understanding of the warehousing trade based on the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

(1) knowledge of warehousing procedures and techniques of material handling
(2) ability to prepare shipping and inventory documents
(3) skill in using warehousing equipment AND
(4) ability to apply regulatory and common-sense safety precautions

B. Additionally, your resume must describe duties you perform without more than normal supervision (e.g., with only regular spot-checks or guidance during progress and upon completion) that pertain to the following JOB ELEMENTS

To demonstrate Job Element #4 you must demonstrate, at a minimum, occasional use some types of warehouse equipment and successful completion of training in operating pallet jacks or forklifts.

To demonstrate Job Element #5 you must demonstrate, at a minimum, ability to apply dexterity and safety in the warehouse.

CONDITIONS OF POSITION:

Due to the nature of Materials Handler (Forklift) work, the following conditions are essential for successful performance in this position and selected candidates must fully comply with all of these conditions in order to meet performance requirements.

Successful performance of Materials Handler (Forklift) work and adherence to these conditions will be assessed during the 1-year probationary period that may be served by new appointees.

(1) Frequently required to stand for extended periods of time while working.

(2) Occasionally must stoop, bend, lift heavy materials and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

(3) Although warehousing work is performed inside, areas are occasionally damp, drafty and poorly lighted.

(4) Work is sometimes performed outside in an open dock area. Work is sometimes dusty, dirty and greasy.

(4) Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes and bruises.
