What to Expect
The Metals and Ceramics team is seeking a Materials Engineer to help cover selection, characterization, standardization, and materials design for metallic materials used in all Tesla products (vehicle, battery storage, solar).
What You’ll Do
  • Develop new materials and processes for current and future products.
  • Qualification of locally produced sheet, extrusion, and forging materials, focusing on both ferrous (steel, stainless steel) and non-ferrous (aluminum) alloys.
  • Materials design engineering support to drive issue resolution and cost savings.
  • Evaluation of material equivalency of metal and ceramic components, including raw material and joining processes (welding, brazing, etc.), to ensure compliance with design intent.
  • Provide expert technical expertise on various processes including stamping, heat treatment, joining, and plating.
  • Author material and process standards as needed.
What You’ll Bring
  • Materials engineering degree. Metallurgical engineering with advanced degrees are preferred.
  • Knowledge of process-structure-property relationships in steel sheet (Low Carbon, Low Alloy, Multi-Phase, Martensitic), aluminum sheet, forgings, extrusions (5xxx and 6xxx), and their relevant manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with metallurgical joining processes (brazing, welding, friction stir).
  • Experience with robust manufacturing quality systems and qualification processes (PFMEA, lean manufacturing).
  • Experience in conducting and understanding standard mechanical property testing.
  • Resilient in the context of a fast-paced and fluid environment (scrappy).
  • Detailed-oriented, able to work both independently and in a collaborative project-focused environment, prompt and dependable.
  • The ideal candidate will be able to provide specific examples of evaluations performed that not only demonstrate an ability to follow standards, but also the ability to obtain a deep understanding of the functional requirements of the property evaluated using a first principles approach.
