Summary of Job

The City of Verona is recruiting to fill a Public Works Maintenance Lead Worker vacancy. The Public Works Lead Worker position is responsible for performing manual work of a skilled nature in the maintenance of Public Works, sewer, water infrastructure, and City property. In addition to performing laborer tasks this position will be responsible for providing lead direction and work coordination of Public Works Maintenance Workers. Duties performed by this position require excellent leadership skills, the ability to multi-task, technical skills and/ special knowledge, which are acquired through experience on the job. This position reports to the Streets Superintendent. Work is performed under general supervision.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:
Examples of the specific tasks for the Public Works Lead Worker position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Receive assignments from supervisor.
  • Instruct, assign, and perform work duties with various crew members and direct and coordinate the crew tasks.
  • Coordinate the daily / weekly assignments between crew and supervisors on progress, status, and completion of assigned work.
  • Lead maintenance crew and ensure projects and/or tasks assigned by the supervisor are completed in a safe, prompt, and effective manner.
  • Establish and ensure work zone safety is established prior to performing work.
  • Make split decisions in field to adapt to challenges / changes in field conditions encountered with the tasks.
  • Coordinate with the public in a professional manner as passer byers may ask questions on activities being performed.
  • Make observations, identify, and document defects for streets and/or utility elements needing repair.
  • Update supervisor on street and utility infrastructure conditions for future repairs, tasks, and projects (internal or capital).
  • Assist with supervisor on PASER rating updates for road condition inventory.
  • Identify ways for improving efficiencies on tasks performed and suggest to supervisor.
  • Maintain and expand knowledge of industry trades for performing all duties necessary to maintain public works and utility infrastructure. Attend and suggest training sessions.
  • Monitor, order, and/or secure supplies / materials for work related activities.
  • Operate and maintain various pieces of equipment such as dump truck, skid steer and articulated loaders, excavator, snow plow with wing and ice control equipment, tractor, street sweeper, utility truck, brush chipper, paint striper, power tools, etc.
  • Assist with the annual painting of road markings and the installation of street signs within the City.
  • Assist with repair and maintenance of City owned street lights.
  • Fabricate, weld, and paint steel for various projects.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to City streets, sidewalks and curb as needed.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to City stormwater facilities.
  • Perform landscaping tasks to include reseeding/resodding damaged grass areas.
  • Participate in the snow and ice control operation. This position is required to respond to after?hours snow removal emergencies.
  • Perform routine maintenance on public buildings and properties.
  • Perform operations and maintenance of the groundwater distribution system and sanitary sewer collection system.
  • Required to be part of the weekly on?call rotation, after? hours emergency on?call roster, and work scheduled overtime on weekends and holidays.
  • Perform all work functions in an efficient manner while maintaining the highest quality service possible, and while following the proper procedures for workplace safety.
  • Perform and oversee Public Works Staff forming and pouring concrete sidewalks, driveway approaches and curb and gutter.
  • Perform and oversee Public Works Staff for routine maintenance and /or installing storm water inlets and structures on street projects.
  • Perform and oversee Public Works Staff for routine maintenance and /or reconstructing structures and establishing final elevations in preparation of paving on street rehabilitation projects.
  • Perform and oversee curb and gutter replacement for routine maintenance and /or on street rehabilitation projects.
  • Perform any other related duties that are not listed here that may be required for this position, or as assigned by the Public Works Street Superintendent or the Director of Public Works.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Organizations skills to prioritize equipment and crew members for the assigned tasks with the ability to instruct and lead.
  • Knowledge of general street and utility construction methods.
  • Knowledge of the materials, equipment, practices, municipal infrastructure for maintenance and construction of streets, storm sewer, sewer, water, and storm water best management practices.
  • Must possess the ability to ensure that the completion of tasks assigned to Public Works staff is completed successfully in a timely manner.
  • Must possess the ability to understand construction drawings, calculate elevations and trouble shoot problems in the field as they arise and provide direction to work groups to ensure tasks assigned are completed in a safe, efficient, and timely manner.
  • The ability to set and adjust line and grade elevations for concrete and utility work.
  • Must possess the ability to oversee and train employees with lesser experience to accomplish department goals.
  • Must possess the ability to organize, schedule and oversee Public Works staff in the absence of the supervisory staff.
  • Must have experience with operating and observing the use of heavy, light, and specialized equipment.
  • Experience and operating knowledge for using and training staff on various tools of the trade.
  • Required to respond to after?hours emergencies which include, but not limited to, water main breaks, service leaks, water and sewer system alarms, sanitary sewer collection system backups, snow plowing, and/or repair sewer and water infrastructure during winter operations.
  • Working knowledge and familiarity with building trades including carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and concrete flatwork.
  • Ability to perform math functions.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner at all times while conducting City business.
  • Required to carry City?provided cell phone while on call.
  • Ability to work alone and with other people to accomplish assigned tasks properly. Including the ability to work with little to no supervision.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability and knowledge of GIS based software programs such as ESRI to document maintenance of infrastructure.
  • Ability to use computer including software packages such as Microsoft Office Word and Excel to document equipment usage.
  • Ability to use electronic equipment devices for effective communication between staff and supervisors.

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.) is required.
  • Five (5) years of experience, within a municipal public works, sewer, and/or water department or a closely related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in operating equipment within a municipal public works, sewer, and/or water department or a closely related field.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Previous experience as lead worker or related position within municipal public works is preferred.
  • Previous experience in road and/or utility construction industry is preferred.

Additional Requirements:
  • A valid drivers’ license.
  • A valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment as well as random drug/alcohol testing.
  • This position must pass a background check.

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Work is performed outdoors (75%) and indoors (25%). Work is performed under all types of weather and temperature conditions, exposure to hazardous traffic conditions and may require the ability to walk on various types of slippery and uneven surfaces. The Lead Worker position must meet the following physical standards:


  • Sit at a table or desk.
  • Stand and walk for up to 12 hours.
  • Bend, crouch and stoop.
  • Intermittently sit, stand, walk and bend.
  • Lift objects weighing less than 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to operate and use hand tools, motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Climb ladders and enter vehicles.
