Role Overview

This role is responsible for coordinating, supervising and leading business unit employee activities to meet production schedules and quality, cost and safety objectives while driving continuous improvement in all work practices. The Business Unit Manager is also responsible for the professional development of unit employees through coaching, mentoring, training, advancement and discipline.

Work Location: Onsite: Farmington, CT

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure all production systems operate at optimum levels and efficiencies

  • Predict, control and continuously improve the business unit’s financial, quality and safety performance using the tools and resources provided and recommendations for process changes

  • Oversee scheduling, staffing and resource management to meet daily production requirements

  • Actively monitor and utilize CIMCO (machine monitoring system) data to address top downtime issues through SMEDs/Kaizens to continuously improve OEE.

  • Actively participate in daily production and other meetings as required

  • Ensure production documentation such as labor tracking, material issues, scrap, quality and overages is timely and accurate

  • Produce, maintain and report business unit’s key performance indicators and other business documents as required

  • Support the delivery of KPI performance statistics that are in line with the Business Unit and overall site’s goals.

  • Support in the facilitation of communication, cooperation, education, and training to maximize the contribution of all team members to the achievement of high standards in HSE.

  • Ensure all production staff adheres to standard business practices, procedures and policies.

  • Perform and support internal quality processes, including layered audits and 5S assessments

  • Implement and support continuous improvement tactics through participation in Lean Kaizen events and other initiatives to increase productivity, quality and safety

  • Assure all quality and HSE management system processes and directives are supported and followed. Ensure issues inhibiting production efficiency are investigated for root cause(s) and that appropriate corrective and preventative actions are completed in a timely manner

  • Lead staff meetings to communicate production needs, implement new processes, corrective actions, and/or train new / existing personnel

  • Provide production staff coaching, mentoring, development, performance appraisals, discipline and training as warranted and required

  • Maintain a clean, orderly and safe work unit using 5S and safety work practices and hold employees accountable for continuously improving these practices

  • Function as the HSE leader for your area(s). Document and analyze work-related hazards, near misses, and incidents. Support in the conducting of investigations to establish root causes and implement measures to prevent a recurrence.

  • Ensure that all team members within specified area understand their responsibilities and seek ways to improve their performance related to Health, Safety, and Environmental protection.

  • Perform and support all other daily production duties as required

Critical Competencies for Success

Supervisory Responsibilities

A minimum of three years supervisory experience is required, preferably in a manufacturing environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing daily coordination and direction of Unit personnel activities
  • Managing employee time and attendance
  • Disciplining and rewarding employees as warranted
  • Completing employee appraisals
  • Employee coaching, mentoring and professional development
  • Promptly and effectively addressing employee complaints and resolving problems
  • Interviewing prospective candidates
  • Training and managing training records

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of two-year (Associates) technical degree or equivalent. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • Minimum of four years related experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Minimum of five years of work experience as a CNC Machinist or a Manufacturing Engineer with experience in fabrication
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment

Skills and Competencies

  • Proven track record of the ability to engage with customers and suppliers and works collaboratively to identify and present value-based solutions.

  • Read and interpret operating and maintenance instructions, work procedures, safety rules and similar documents

  • Effective written and verbal communication, including ability to explain technical issues in a manner for employee understanding

  • Proficient in creating and validating production processes

  • Mathematical skills:Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using whole and decimal numbers.

  • Ability to understand and evaluate basic production and financial data

  • Technical orientation with excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills

  • Ability to read engineering blue prints and other technical drawings

  • Understanding of MRP system and basic lean manufacturing practices

  • Proficient in employee supervision, coaching, mentoring and development

  • Flexibility in adjusting to changes in daily priorities

  • Effective in cross-functional team work

  • Strong organizational and project management skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Lean Manufacturing certification is preferred
