Job Description Summary

Performs basic machine design duties requiring the use of academic design techniques, computation, technical knowledge, and standard design theory and principles. Work is performed in accordance with specific instructions and basic design concepts, but some original mechanism designs are used in developing the detailed design of a production machine. Work is subject to close check in progress and upon completion for engineering and economic soundness, and adherence to process requirements and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and designs machines or mechanisms, generally the combination and/or application of standard commercial components. Works from mock-up of each station or detailed work specifications. May consult with Process Engineers for clarification of machine function or production requirements. May travel to machine builders to research machines.

  • Implements machine changes and new designs which result in improving machine performance and decreases waste.

  • Searches catalogs for commercially available machine components and mechanisms which may be feasible to perform the function. Checks drawing files for standard machine, sub-assemblies, and parts with design characteristics which may be easily modified to meet new requirements. Considers essentially the function of the machine in determining a design criterion to follow. Prepares preliminary design drawings and obtains approval of superior before completing overall layout.

  • Responsible for functional accuracy of design and compatibility with product manufacture. Determines adequate construction details to insure operational reliability of the machine without sacrificing simplicity of construction. Makes the necessary computations to assure the design and standards conform with specifications. Assures all designs of responsibility conform to OSHA safety and environmental requirements.

  • Investigates problems and redesigns existing equipment to incorporate improvements in function and economy of manufacture.

  • Prepares complete bills of material. Selects reliable commercial component and designates materials to be used for construction. Specifies complete information for items to be purchased.

  • Assists machine shop personnel with construction questions and interpretation of prints. Makes minor detail changes on machine components which will simplify fabrication or assembly.

  • Assists technicians in the debugging of completed machines. Prepares a program to be followed in the debugging and checkout of machines.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Associate's Degree in Machine Design, Machine Tool or other technical related degree.

  • Minimum Experience: Completion of two years of engineering course work at a recognized college or university or graduation from a technical school in Machine Design or Machining or equivalent experience.

  • Must have understanding of and be experienced in the use of Computer Automated Design (CAD) software - Autodesk Software preferred.

  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office.
