Job Description:

The Life Flight Paramedic demonstrates advanced critical thinking capabilities in working autonomously and in collaboration with other health care providers in the delivery of care to critically ill patients in diverse and non-traditional settings. This position will travel to air bases. This includes Salt Lake City, Rosevelt, and St. George Regional.

Scope

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the following age groups: pediatric and adult. All Life Flight medical crew members may be subject to certain work conditions while functioning in the full capacity of their position. These work conditions include, but are not limited to:
performance of essential job responsibilities in a moving aircraft, ground ambulance, hospital as well as the potential to do so in an outdoor environment (inclement weather, extremes of temperature, accident scenes, steep terrain, back country, etc.),
exposure to noise, vibration, and dehydrating environment of an aircraft or ground ambulance,
unpressurized helicopter flight at altitudes which may range to 10,000 feet,
unexpected depressurization of fixed wing at altitude,
exposure to patients with known or unknown infectious disease in an enclosed space.

Life Flight Paramedics must work a minimum of two 12 hour shifts per pay period for Life Flight and maintain minimum clinical experience hours per stated requirements.

Job Essentials

Provides care based on review and analysis of patient information received from referring health care providers, the patient record, and initial and ongoing assessment of physical findings.
Demonstrates effective, independent critical thinking process and autonomous and collaborative practice in the provision of patient care.
Selects and administers the appropriate medications and calculates correct dosage based on physical findings, knowledge base, and patient care guidelines.
Demonstrates clinical proficiency including knowledge base, organization and efficiency of care delivery, and input to patient care process.
Demonstrates proficiency in use of specialty team equipment in the transport environment.
Communicates in an effective and timely manner with team members, communication specialists, control physicians, referring and receiving health care personnel, and patient/family members. Coordinates and effectively communicates decision making process and plan for patient care with team member and other health care providers, where possible and appropriate.
Ensures that patient care environment, equipment and supplies are available, clean and functioning appropriately. Maintains a safe environment for self, team members, and patients.
Evaluates transports according to Life Flight Quality Management criteria and guidelines as defined by service.
Actively seeks to develop self. Actively seeks to foster education and development of peers and other health care professionals. Presents/participates in selected case reviews in flight meetings. Participates in the education of team members and/or other health care providers. Serves as a resource to discuss transports, Life Flight operations, and/or other work-related questions/concerns/issues. Uses non-transport time for work-related/professional development activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current State of Utah Certification to practice as a paramedic.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
  • Certification(s) as appropriate to area(s) of practice: (i.e. Pediatric Advanced Life Support [PALS], Advanced Cardiac Life Support [ACLS]).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
  • Three years of experience as a 911 responder and working for a 911 response agency at time of hire.
  • Must weigh less than 215 pounds fully dressed at the time of hire and must maintain that weight.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with intensive care transports
  • Five years of experience as a 911 responder
  • Advanced certification as Flight Paramedic (FP-C) or Critical Care Transport Paramedic (CCTP) (must obtain within 2 years of hire and maintain throughout employment)
  • Advanced Trauma Transport Certification (must have within 1 year of hire and maintain throughout employment)
  • Ventilation Lab, Equipment Lab, Procedure Lab, and Survival Training (must obtain within 3 months of hire and maintained annually)

Physical Requirements:

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate small and enclosed space, as well as crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
