The primary job duty of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is to provide routine care, observe patients health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes. Always maintains patient comfort and safety. Follows all departmental policies and procedures as well as safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works in a variety of settings which can include nursing homes, home care, assisted living, Hospice, hospitals, community based long-term care, and other long-term care settings.

Job Function: Provide direct nursing care

  • Ongoing assessments of residents physical and mental health
  • Responsible for making rounds to observe and evaluate the physical, social, and emotional needs of residents
  • Perform and document comprehensive assessments
  • Administer medications via sub q, IM injection, and intravenous therapy
  • Obtain and record patients vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration rate
  • Explaining treatments and protocols to residents and or family members

Job Function: Observe patients

  • Changing behaviors, including complaints or physical symptoms
  • Under treatment to identify progress, side-effects, or medications, etc.
  • Communicate with physicians, caregivers, and other staff about patient condition, treatment plans, and suggested activities

Job Function: Assigns and delegates duties to non-licensed nursing staff

Job Function: Admit new residents

  • Planning and managing patient care according to each patients needs
  • Interview patients and record their medical history

Job Function: Assist physicians during rounds of residents rooms

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

CLIMBING- Ascending or descending stairs, ladders, ramps, etc., using feet and legs and /or hands and arms.

STOOPING- Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

KNEELING- Bending legs at knees to come to a rest on knee or knees.

REACHING- Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

STANDING- Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time.

WALKING- Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks

PUSHING- Use of upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to move something forward, downward or outward.

21 - 50 lbs. 51 lbs. or more

PULLING- Use of upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained
motion.

LIFTING-Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Requires the use of upper extremities and back muscles.

CARRYING- Holding and moving/transporting an object about.

FEELING- Perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of (using) fingertips.

TALKING- Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Must convey detailed or
spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.

HEARING- Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.

SEEING- The process of perceiving objects by use of the eyes to perform an activity. Visual acuity
requirements include ability to discern position of object(s), shape of object(s), color, depth perception, visual inspection.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Come to work as scheduled and consistently demonstrate dependability and punctuality.
  • Ability to think and work independently and with direction.
  • Communicate with staff members in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment.
  • Comfortable using a computer.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While the position will work in a clinical environment, travel to the various facilities and work locations may be necessary. Work hours will vary from time to time depending upon the needs of the business. Dependable attendance is required for this position. Shifts can vary, but most Licensed Practical Nurses are expected to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
