Job Title: User Services Librarian

Job Summary:

This position is in support of the Department of the Air Force. The User Services Librarian will provide a variety of user services to Phillips Research Site (PRS) customers and staff, including maintaining library inventory, providing references, performing research, and answering inquiries.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Implementing the Technical Library Collection Development Plan created by the Government Technical Librarian for collection development
  • Evaluating the collection for content applicability and currency to the Phillips Research Site (PRS) mission
  • Maintaining the technical library collection, including re-shelving items, shifting material on the shelves to optimize space and accessibility, keep material in proper location on shelves, and assist customers in locating material
  • Relocating of library materials and consolidation of one collection with other collections or portions thereof
  • Conducting inventory
  • Acquiring information resources and information access for the technical library collection in response to the collection development plan and customer requests
  • Coordinating supporting services, such as software licenses and electronic journal and other subscriptions to be put into place and maintained
  • Retaining copies of all purchase requests
  • Providing reference services from a professional librarian at the level of mediation requested by the customer, ranging from fully mediated to "do-it-yourself," using a variety of relevant resources to include print, non-print, or electronic formats that meet the scientific, technical, or managerial informational requirements of customers
  • Providing in-depth reference services to include referral to other base and DoD programs, and active participation in consortia, networks, resource sharing and cooperative activities, and available regional or national DoD sponsored bibliographic databases
  • Conducting comprehensive literature searches using appropriate commercial databases and open literature sources
  • Manning the information desk and providing customer assistance
  • Providing collections, services, and supplementary references to support training technical library customers on use of the technical library

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Active Secret clearance
  • Master of Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program
  • 1+ years of experience in scientific and technical reference work, including:
    • online databases
    • On-Line Computer Library Center (OCLC) systems
    • search and retrieval
    • bibliographic instruction
    • all aspects of bibliographic control of a technical library collection, with emphasis on digital competencies

  • Demonstrated competency in:
    • leveraging interpersonal contacts and relationships to facilitate information and knowledge sharing
    • using information and communications technologies to effectively meet the information and knowledge needs of communities and organizations
    • maintaining knowledge of the of the content resources available to meet community needs
  • In-depth knowledge of information and data search and retrieval engine functions

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Monday - Friday, normal business hours
