Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
As a member of the University of South Carolina Police Department, the Law Enforcement Officer position provides law enforcement, security, and protection for the entire 400-plus acre UofSC campus situated in Columbia, South Carolina. This position serves as a certified (Class 1) law enforcement officer in accordance with the South Carolina Code of Laws and is empowered with full arrest and police authority statewide. USCPD Law Enforcement Officers enforce state laws, National Advocacy Center rules and regulations, and University rules and regulations. In addition to traditional police patrol duties, this position also provides VIP detail security and assists with ensuring the safety and security of University sports events, concerts and other special events.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma. Must be 21 years of age, be physically qualified and successfully pass a background investigation.

Residency Requirement: In the event of emergencies, selected candidates are subject to being called to work on a 24 hours a day/7 days a week/365 days a year basis. All law enforcement officers must reside in Richland County, South Carolina, or a county contiguous to Richland County (i.e., Calhoun, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry, and Sumter Counties). The Chief of Police may grant temporary or permanent exceptions to this residency requirement.

Preferred Qualifications
Current South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) Class 1 law enforcement officer certification – or equivalent out-of-state law enforcement certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior, role, modern law enforcement techniques, and evidence collection. Knowledge of Constitutionally mandated rights. Knowledge of South Carolina law, relevant case law, and policies of the University. Ability to exercise sound judgement within an established set of core departmental values. Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of law enforcement agencies. Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment. Ability to communicate with a diverse population, to include, the ability to deescalate conflicts and potentially volatile situations.

  • No Experience = $43,785 (PLUS $4,000 shift differential after certification)
  • After Field Training = $45,974 (PLUS $4,000 shift differential = $49,974)
  • Two Years Certified = $48,273 (PLUS $4,000 shift differential = $52,273)
  • Three Years Certified = $50,686 (PLUS $4,000 shift differential = $54,686)
  • Four Years Certified = $53,221 (PLUS $4,000 shift differential = $57,221)
  • Five or More Years Certified = $55,881 (PLUS $4,000 shift differential = $59,881)
