The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine provides high quality diagnostic and therapeutic care to its patients through the examination and interpretation of tissues, blood and other body fluids. Our laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and located in three distinct facilities: Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion (SESP), Pathology Building, and Specialty Testing Center. The department is one of UCDMC’s largest ancillary services with more than 250 employees across 20 distinct units.

Job Responsibilities

The Laboratory Billing Assistant provides analysis of billing issues, trends and analytical support for the department and is expected to be fully knowledgeable in Pathology & Laboratory billing practices. This position requires the use of skills to independently, or with minimal general direction, coordinate and follow through in overall data management and works collaboratively with the Supervisor of the Billing Team. The candidate will assist in the identification of billing issues and recommend solutions to reduce errors and maximize reimbursement.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience working in a Patient Financial Service.
  • Working knowledge of ICD-10 CM, CPT, and HCPCS classification.
  • Knowledge of billing principles.
  • Customer service experience
  • Knowledge of computer system such as EMR, outlook email, and Microsoft Office,.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working experience as a hospital lab billing rep. setting.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of government programs, private insurance, professional and technical fee billing and reimbursements. These would include but are not limited to Medicare, NCD, LCD, Medi-Cal, UCD Managed Care, Commercial Insurances, and other healthcare industry trends,
  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical, diagnostic and Pathology & Laboratory Medicine procedural terminology.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to communicate clearly and effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals in a diverse environment, including, but not limited to patients, technical and professional staff, management, and physician faculty, peers, and co-workers inside and outside of our departments.
  • Experience conducting research, perform quantitative analysis, and develop recommendations for procedural system changes.
  • 10. Experience compiling billing data related to patient encounters from recognized sources or information systems.
  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, and guidelines governing medical records, confidentiality, privacy, and provision to others, including HIPAA.

Special Requirements

This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
