Maritime Applied Physics Corporation (MAPC) is a Baltimore based engineering, research, development, and production company focused on marine technologies. We have a current opening for a technician in the Brunswick, Maine office.

Primary responsibilities

MAPC has an opening for a full time (40hr/wk) Junior Technician or Technician with an interest in unique vessel and ship system designs to work on diverse projects across the company portfolio. The preferred candidate will be capable of working with multi-disciplinary project teams ranging from Naval Architects to logistics specialists to specialized, experienced members of the welding, electronics, machining, and mechanical assembly trades.

MAPC work extends from concept studies through preliminary, contract, detailed design and building phases and includes developmental and in-service electromechanical marine systems and components. MAPC is seeking a candidate who has existing knowledge and skills supporting these tasks and an interest in expanding their knowledge to solve novel problems.

The Junior Technician job duties include:

· Basic mechanical tasks, including use of lathe, drill press, and other power tools under supervision from other shop personnel

· Assembly

· Sanding

· Painting and preservation

· Packaging for shipment

· Operation of pallet jacks

· Use and disposal of lubricants, solvents, and preservatives per technical standards

· Proven history of reliability with respect to work schedules

· Adherence to company security, safety, and hazardous material standards

Technician job duties include the Junior Technician items and:

· Advanced mechanical tasks, including use of lathes, drill press, and other power tools with minimal guidance beyond engineering drawings

· Assembly of serial production and protype items

· Use and disposal of lubricants, solvents, and preservatives per technical standards

· Adherence and input to company security, safety, and hazardous material standards

· Familiarity with quality assurance, inventory control and configuration management processes. Application of ISO 9001 and / or AS9100 standards for quality assurance and control would be particularly useful.

· Review of supplier documentation for vendor furnished items and development of documentation required for manufacture of MAPC-produced items

· Knowledge of metal fabrication, joining, and finishing systems and which are compatible with each other

· Knowledge of piping and hose fittings and connections

· Review of new designs for manufacturability and proposal of alternative methods that improve safety or reduce risk or cost

· Selecetion of tools for assembly work, including:

1. Recognizing and recommending when better / safer / more cost effective techniques would be appropriate; and

2. Applying correctly calibrated tools for different elements of work.

· Maintenance of tools and fabrication equipment, including maintaining calibration records

· Review and interpretation of engineering drawings, bills of material, and work instructions without assistance for straightforward items.

· One or more of the follwing items:

§ Welding of aluminum and sheet metal per AWS, ABS, or Navy standards.

§ Soldering of electronic / electrical items per J-STD-001 or similar standards.

§ Construction and testing of hydraulic, pneumatic, and composite components.

§ Operation of forklift, subject to training and licensure.

Travel

Applicants should have the ability to travel on an occasional basis. The expected level of travel would be roughly 30 days per year subject to increase or decrease depending upon business needs. Applicants should be able to board and traverse boats and ships.

Teamwork

Will be critical and the candidate should be able to work productively and efficiently as part of a team.

Additional requirements and factors

Junior Technicians or Technicians must be capable of performing physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and whole body movements, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Applicants should be able to lift 40 pounds from the ground to four feet above the floor.

Work environment may be outdoors in extreme heat and cold environments, but typically is not.

Successful applicants must be US citizens.

Applicants should be able to read and write clearly in English. Familiarity with basic office software (e-mail, simple spreadsheets) is desirable. The ability to navigate three dimensional models or Autocad drawings would be a benefit.

US military service or past shipboard or shipyard / repair facility assignment, as a civilian or in conjunction with US military service, is beneficial.
