Position is responsible for risk-based analysis of current state and for tactically developing/implementing training strategies, occupational safety initiatives and environmental programs. Position develops Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and drives bottom-line safety and sustainability results through the Corporate EHS&S Program and best practice safety initiatives which span across operations, sanitation and food safety disciplines. Director will partner with HR to ensure effective management of Workers' Compensation initiatives, leveraging internal and external resources, to accomplish objectives for reducing injury risk, Company's Workers Compensation liability, and ensuring compliance with OSHA requirements for employee safety and verify all appropriate reporting is complete and accurate.

Director will ensure adherence to the Corporate EHS&S Standards and develop/execute Corporate driven audit programs. Director will work with the facilities to address safety risks/gaps and facilitate opportunities for new programs, processes, and systems. Director will influence management on the alignment of EHS&S strategies, annual objectives, and plant project plans.

Travel required is 35%. This position reports to the Vice President of Food Safety, Quality, Regulatory, and EHSS and is based at Corporate HQ, Mount Laurel, NJ.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop proactive/strategic Corporate driven EHS&S Program with monthly/annual KPIs and clear direction to improve bottom-line safety results.
  • Compile/maintain safety standards/policies and procedures aligned with OSHA which integrate environmental management and sustainability into standards, procedures and practices.
  • Foster a culture of “Do It Safe, Do It Right the First Time” and drive continuous improvement in safety aimed at transforming the company into an injury free workplace.
  • Design/drive Corporate driven EHS audit program to ensure compliance with company standards, programs, regulatory agencies and oversee the implementation of corrective/preventive actions to eliminate risk and prevent injury.
  • Manage Workers' Compensation initiatives, leveraging internal and external resources, to accomplish objectives for reducing injury risk, Company's Workers Compensation liability, and ensuring compliance with OSHA requirements for employee safety as well as verifying all appropriate reporting is complete and accurate.
  • Provide Leadership to guide facilities in managing OSHA citations, conferences, and inspections.
  • Monitor lost-time injuries/noninjury incident reports and worker’s compensation claims, provide follow ups as needed.
  • Design and provide ad-hoc loss reports for risk and executive leadership utilization.
  • Advise manufacturing plants and corporate staff of regulatory changes with sufficient advance notice so that compliance is achieved on the effective date of new regulation.
  • Provide technical support, leadership and functional knowledge to corporate and plant personnel to ensure compliance with applicable occupational safety and health regulations.
  • Promote environmental, occupational safety and health awareness through internal company biweekly calls, annual summits, memoranda, newsletters and/or specific training programs.
  • Assist, as necessary, in implementation of a hazard communication program and report preparation; and direct site environmental contacts on environmental matters including air, water, and waste regulatory compliance, best practices and sustainability initiatives.
  • Drive data collection for environmental sustainability.
  • Work closely with staff in engineering, human resources, legal, operations, sanitation, food safety, quality and research and development on safe operations initiatives.
  • Influence management to ensure alignment of EHS&S strategies and annual objectives.
  • Assist in development of EHS&S risk assessments, root cause analysis and driving continuous improvement.

Position Requirements:

  • Strong leadership abilities with knowledge and passion for EHS&S and team building as well as business acumen to support and influence facility leadership.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state occupational safety and health (EHS&S) regulations with skills and ability to execute against requirements. Understand and monitor regulatory changes.
  • Experience in managing OSHA VPP and other EHS&S initiatives in food manufacturing.
  • Ability and skills to objectively lead, collect data, assess situations, separate facts from sound bites, make sound, risk-based decisions balancing stakeholder needs protecting the people and brand equity.
  • Capable of engaging facility safety personnel in development and standardization of EHS&S manuals, policies, procedures, data templates, audit standards, procedures, and KPIs.
  • Supports plant personnel and HR staff handling EHS&S issues investigation, documentation, and resolution.
  • Ability to drive organizational alignment on EHS&S objectives with the adoption of structure, processes, and systems to achieve objectives.
  • Dedicated work habits, takes initiative, sets high standards.
  • Preferred MS Occupational Health & Safety (or related degree), thorough knowledge and understanding of OSHA 1910 standards; and a minimum of 15 years required food industry experience with demonstrated achievement and leadership.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications
