Position Summary:
The Instrument & Electrical (I&E) Technician's primary responsibility is to maintain the controls hardware, instrumentation, analyzers, and electrical equipment at the Reno, Nevada Refinery. Key responsibilities of the I&E Technician include the performance of preventive maintenance programs for the equipment and troubleshoot and repair as needed. They will also assist in the management of all spare parts for instrument, electrical and analytical (IEA) equipment.

Essential Job Duties / Responsibilities:
  • Champions and models a safety-first environment by positively supporting the safety culture through training, identifying and addressing safety issues, and demonstrating a strong safety attitude.
  • Executes assigned demand and preventive maintenance tasks on schedule and documents results in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Recommends improvements to job tasks and equipment to improve safety, reliability, and cost. Works with Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance to implement improvements.
  • Works with Operations and other Maintenance crafts to safely address plant problems.
  • Safely performs troubleshooting on equipment (operating and off-line) without impacting reliability and makes repairs as needed.
  • Direct contractors to perform instrument/electrical work as needed to supplement I/E technicians for both routine activities and projects.
  • Assist in the creation/modification of operating and maintenance procedures for instrumentation, analyzers, and electrical equipment.
  • Supports the specification and development of spare parts list for IEA equipment.
  • Maintains analytical equipment
  • Works with the Maintenance Coordinator and Operations to plan and schedule preventive maintenance, non-routine maintenance, and project work.
  • Provides technical guidance and recommendations for the design, installation, and operation of instrument and electrical equipment
  • Follows Plant Safety and Work Permit processes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to ensure the overall success of the Refinery facilities.

Qualification Requirements:
  • 5+ years electrical, instrument and on-line analyzer operation and maintenance experience in the refining or chemical processing industry. (Formal education can be used for years of experience).
  • A.S. Degree or higher in electronics, process instrumentation or related field, preferred.
  • Understanding and ability to comply with all Company, local, state and federal regulations, policies, guidelines and procedures.
  • Successfully complete all required training (classroom, computer based and on-the-job) and testing.
  • To ensure the effective and safe performance of the job, the ability to effectively communicate in English with others, in both written and in verbal form is required, as well as reading and writing skills and the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to maintain such license.
  • Successful completion of a post-contingent offer medical examination to ensure the physical requirements (listed below) necessary for the safe operation of Refinery or job-related as consistent with business necessity, as allowed by federal and state law, can be performed without endangering the health and safety of themselves or others.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
  • Understand and uses the proper PPE for the task (i.e. hard hat, gloves, arc flash suits, etc.)
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with maintaining and troubleshooting electrical equipment ranging from 13.8 KV down to 24 VDC with the ability to learn the skills for working on 120 KV systems.
  • Knowledgeable of NFPA 70E for arc flash classification, boundary distance and PPE.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with maintaining and troubleshooting analyzers such as mass spectrometer, (variable magnetic sector and quad pole), FTIR's, Total Sulphur, O2, Gas Chromatograph, pH, etc. Understands calibration materials/equipment and assist in the management of inventory.
Instrument & Electrical Technician
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with test equipment such as hart communicators, calibration equipment and software packages for reviewing PLC logic.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as Modbus, TCP/IP, RS 485, RS 232.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with a professional and courteous attitude. Ability to maintain detailed, complete and accurate records.
  • Ability to effectively operate a computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities, use of Microsoft Office suite programs.
  • Knowledge of typical safety issues in a refinery, chemical plant and solids handling environments.
  • Ability to read single-line / one-line electrical drawings and process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Ability to organize maintenance work, accomplish tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of high and low voltage equipment.
  • Knowledge of electronic instrumentation, PLC's, DCS systems, and on-line and lab analyzers and the software associated with said equipment.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Physical Requirements:
  • Job duties will routinely require working on or around electrical devices and circuits up to and including 13,800 Volts.
  • Job duties may routinely require standing, climbing ladders, walking, sitting, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, talking and hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping.
  • Job duties may routinely require specific vision abilities which include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to quickly adjust and focus vision.
  • Job duties may routinely require lifting and/or carrying objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Job duties may routinely require pushing and/or pulling objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Job duties may routinely require climbing ladders and/or stairs to heights over 175 ft. and working in elevated locations.
  • Job duties may require working in enclosed/confined spaces.
  • Must follow company policy when operating any company vehicles.
  • Job duties may routinely require performing strenuous physical activity while wearing personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to comply with respiratory protection program.
