The University of Montana invites applications for the Indigenous First Year Experience (IFYE) Director. The IFYE Director will promote the education of Indigenous students and assist in their retention at the University of Montana by teaching a weekly seminar and providing educational, cultural, and community building opportunities for a cohort of students that are in their first year at UM.


Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Fill out/submit IFYE course data forms to the Registrar’s office, generate IFYE content to share on Moodle, and develop IFYE course syllabus/designed while maintaining consistent communications to stakeholders throughout the academic year regarding IFYE program implementation.
  • Identify, hire and supervise Resident Assistants for the student Cohort living in UM Housing IFYE Living and Learning Community, tutors for the associate study table, and peer mentors associated with the program.
  • Work with AISS, Native American Studies (NAS), Tribal Outreach, and other campus-based advisors (and staff/faculty when appropriate) to coordinate cohort activities, events, and course activities across to build support for efforts that engage and support the Indigenous First Year Experience (IFYE) cohort’s success.
  • Work with All Nations Health Center (staff), Missoula Public Schools Native American Student Services Department and other Missoula-based programs, services and community partners (tribal and non-tribal) to support IFYE students/cohort activities/events to build from them greater awareness, engagement with off-campus and Missoula community entities that can identify support in the broader community.
  • Promote and provide outreach support to ensure that AI/AN high school seniors in Montana’s tribal and urban communities have applied to UM and are aware of the Indigenous First Year Experience (IFYE) program.
  • Manage IFYE finances and accounts.
  • Collaborate with UM Admissions, Housing, Dining and other offices to ensure IFYE students have secured living, dining, and other arrangements (including child care) prior to the date the cohort arrives on campus.
  • Analyzing and sharing IFYE student/cohort data and presenting program progress reports with stakeholders to conduct evaluations each semester assessing student/cohort/program outcomes and providing further recommendations for program scope and improvements from year to year.

Position Details

  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary for this position is $40,000-$48,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and experience successfully creating and delivering college student transition and success programming, particularly to indigenous student populations.
  • Experience working with or leading students or teams in a college or similar setting.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and promoting inclusivity through work.
  • Ability to resolve conflict through mediation.
  • Possess a thorough ability to communicate with a wide variety of diverse people in a precise and professional manner, both orally, electronically and through written word.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive material in accordance with FERPA and the Clery Act.
  • Ability to critically think and resolve problems during emergency and crisis response.
  • Ability to maintain an organized workload requiring multi-tasking, delegations, as needed, and the need to prioritize various responsibilities with little direct supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a related field
